Kurt:
I wrote the following to the managing editor of the Morning News.
Am I correct that The Dallas Morning News no longer carries the Mallard Fillmore comic strip? I am going to assume that its tone was too conservative for complainers from the left.
Are you open to “canceling” some comics from the left of center? How about starting with Doonesbury.
To be candid, I find that, more and more, the news articles in the Morning News are slanted from the left, and that doesn’t even include the articles that you pick up from predictably left-leaning outlets. I find myself getting angry as I read obviously biased articles in what has become an obviously biased newspaper.
I stopped my long-term subscription a few years ago for this very reason. I picked it back up a couple of years ago, and now I am wondering why.
This is his response:
Thanks for reading The Dallas Morning News and for writing to me about Mallard Fillmore.
On multiple occasions over an extended period, we’ve received many emails and calls from readers about Mallard Fillmore after they found a particular strip’s content offensive. We also know that Mallard Fillmore consistently underperformed in terms of overall readership compared with other comic strips. Many publications regularly change comic strips based on readership and audience feedback.
In regard to our news coverage, what are some specific stories in which we've been biased? I ask not to challenge you or out of a position of defensiveness. I ask because I'd like to further understand your point of view.
I'm not certain how, or whether it is worthwhile, to respond, but I am open to ideas.
