I can remember Steve being the first friend I met at RHS. I was introduced as the latest transfer student during World History class with Ms Ward. When she asked where I was from, I answered "Jesuit." Steve, not missing a beat said: "Well we know why you're here. No girls!" We both sat across from one another on the first row in front. (all of this while pointing to the cute blond across from him!) He so funny!
Years later, we ran into each other at a theater after having seen "The Passion of the Christ." We both were teary eyed after witnessing Gibson's "over the top" violence and suffering! I saw the real compassion in my friend and love for his Lord!
I'm afraid we didn't always stay in touch, but when we did see each other, he always had that wonderful smile......and the conversation would start all over again, as though no time had passed!
Years later, he invited me to a Rangers game; whereupon seeing him he gave me a big hug......saying "Missed you Jerry!" Ellen was with me and we met Madison and Mackenzie as well. Don't remember if they won, but we all had a good time!
When Steve was hospitalized at CC Young, we had a lot of fun in our 1-2 hr visit! I had informed him upon leaving that I had a volunteer job visiting patients at a hospital in S. Texas. And that, when I would leave I would ask the patient if they wanted me to bless them. (I don't remember any NO answers!) Steve being the Christian he was,
said: "Well that can't hurt!" This action was as much for me, as it was for them; letting them know I'd be praying for them!
Steve, I know you're in a happier place (no more suffering) but THiS time I'M saying I miss you! Rest peacefully brother!
