Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

Lowell,

I think Cruz was incensed about Trump's idiotic quip about the senior Mr. Cruz, but I guess Cruz decided that the dumb reference made by Trump was just one of many nonsensical statements attributed to Trump, and was not worth feuding about any further.  Cruz was focused on trying to convince Republicans of his worthiness to become president and wanted to spend his time and energy on that.   As the election time loomed, the two men were pitted against each other as the only opponents left, with Trump ultimately winning as the Republican candidate.  Later, after the election results were tallied, Trump actually made amends somewhat with Cruz, interviewing Cruz for a cabinet position.  Cruz seemed interested in what Trump had to offer, so the two men put aside differences, and met to discuss possibilities.  Later, as the year progressed, Cruz supported Trump's/ the Republican's platform to get our favored issues presented and passed as often as possible, for the good of the country.  As I recall, the two got along reasonably well from then on, committed as Republicans, doing whatever needed to be done to achieve Republican goals.

But then you knew this, I'm sure, as we all witnessed what transpired after the election.  We've watched Cruz and other Repubs come reluctantly to support most of Trump's endeavors, even when Trump made everything he did complicated with many foibles and massive personality irritations.

It's very trying to be around and work with Trump, as we know.

Here's another local, Michelle Alany & the Mystics. She's a Jewish woman who is from Iraq, I think. So she speaks English, Hebrew, and I guess Arabic?

But this is for LANCE. Hopefully this won't cause him any narcoleptic moments! I got to see her last Friday night for free and also yell out Shabbat, Shalom from the audience.

This is not following the current thread other than Jim Bedwell's comment about the Cowboys.

Jim, it could be the year. I don't yet know how.....and we have to get some people healthy again.

But it would be fun. The game the other night reminded of what it was like....(hate to say how many years)

back then.

Just seeing all those great players and coaches at half-time the other night gave me the goosebumps.......

especially this:

Jerry,

Yes, who knows what the future holds - we just know it is & always should be, or at least include Unknown Hinson.

We have some tough opponents with the Chiefs, improved Las Vegas Raiders, Saints, etc. plus I can't help but think we're going to lose at least one of our division games even though on paper we shouldn't at this point. I'm glad we have the Patriots this year rather than when Brady was there, especially since we never beat that duo. I think this new DC Dan Quinn is really a shot in the arm along with all the new defensive guys plus most of our offensive weapons are available with the offensive line almost back to normal now. Finally my only complaint about our QB Dak in the past was that even though, yes, I've seen him throw some great passes in the past, he never could shake his inconsistency as a passer - so he was often throwing behind or ahead of the receivers. Yes, all of them throw a bad pass sometimes, but I thought it was a recurring problem for him. But this year it looks to me that he's shed that deficiency. Maybe he needs to suffer another injury if that problem returns? I always have liked everything else about Dak, an obvious leader, determined, usually makes good decisions in the chaos, can run pretty well, good enough arm strength, etc.

Yes, Steele, that backup tackle from Tech (GO FIGURE!) looks a lot better than last year. So we've improved in a lot of ways, I think. I am of course loving our new number 1 draft pick Micah Parsons - he was the GUY I wanted before the draft, and I couldn't believe it when we got him. You hear people say a lot, "There will never be another one like.........". Well, I think maybe that was true of Lawrence Taylor, but even with that, Parsons is the next best thing in my mind. I remember the normally reticent Tom Landry's remarking publicly what a great player the Giants got when they drafted Taylor, as Joe Theismann found out later.......but Landry just didn't say or do things like that much, did he? However with LT.............

Yes, on my all-time Cowboy team, Cliff Harris is the starting free safety. My strong safety is Darren Woodson - he should be next in the Hall of Fame. What a reliable, naturally gifted athlete Woodson was - his head, unlike Dez Bryant's, was ALWAYS in the game. He could really cover people too.

And unlike my location when Barry Bonds hit number 756, I remember exactly where I was in that playoff game at the end against the Vikings in the 75 season with Staubach to Drew Pearson!

In conclusion, it is Jerryville (as in Jones, not May); therefore, quien sabe, senor? At least one thing is GUARANTEED - as with Joe King Carrasco, IT WILL BE INTERESTING!

Lowell,

It is not a matter of me not getting your comments.  You and I have a complete disconnect.  I find myself thinking that you could not possibly be coherent about some subjects while supporting the current misguided mental cripple and deteriorating President.  You seem so pragmatic on many subjects, but your support for lyin Biden destroys all the rest of your credibility.  Then, if things weren't bad enough you retaliate childishly by substituting Trump when we are talking about current events.  Trump is not relevent to the disasters that are occuring on a monthly basis now.  Unfortunately there is not a whole opposition party to Biden that has fixated on getting him out of office at any cost, including sacrificing their integrity as there was when Trump was in office or Biden would already be impeached.  Republicans and Independents, to their detriment, are always going to try to play fair.

The punchline should have been "Now which one is my wife, and which one is my daughter?"

Lowell,

Despite our differing viewpoints, I wish you a "Happy Birthday" today.  Let us know how you celebrated.

Happy Birthday Lowell!

Did you turn 18 years old while you were at UT Austin?

I guess when you were living near WASHINGTON DC, those folks there allowed kids to start school early, huh?

I suppose that figures.  People up there don't understand the importance of maturity.  (Just teasing)

Hope you get a fabulous steak dinner tonight, or whatever is your favorite!

Lowell,

Happy birthday, young 'un!

You said "yes, libs sound stupid to conservatives...And for sure conservatives sound very smart to liberals."

The first part is definitely true. The second part? REALLY? I never believed that. You's (New Jersey childhood influence) think we sound VERY SMART?!?!?!

And Freddie King, like Albert King, what an ace! B.B. King? No guitar ace, but a lot of soul - no, I don't have any B.B. King music but I have stuff from the other 2 Kings.

People don't have a strong intuitive sense of how much larger one billion is than one million.

! million seconds is 11 days.

! billion seconds is 31.5 years.

Bedwell!  I'm sure you can continue this message with how many seconds are in 1 trillion years.......Speak up math whizz!

10/01/21 09:32 PM #22404

Jim Bedwell

Lady Lanajuju of Parchman's Farm & Country Estate,

Math whiz? Think Tommy or Kurt or Fussell or Jean Ward, not I. I was good at math in high school but nothing remarkable math-wise after that.

HOWEVER, I did a similar exercise once. I learned the nearest star to ours is about 4 light years away. I calculated that distance at 23.5 trillion miles, give or take. I also found that John Glenn was going about 16,000 miles per hour when he orbited the earth in 1962. So to get to the nearest star ANYWHERE - there are 100-400 billions of stars in our galaxy the Milky Way, according to Wikipedia - the galaxy's estimated visible diameter is 100,000-200,000 light-years - so anyway the amount of time for that 1-way trip to the nearest star (don't know if any livable planets are there - chances are, slim to none, with an emphasis on none), going 16K mph like John Glenn did? I forget the exact number but it was over 160,000 YEARS to get there, or back, closer to 170K years, and that's at 16,000 mph.

Even though I'm no scientist, my conclusion of the chances of any life-passengered UFO's in our solar system that didn't originate in our solar system? ZERO.

I was reading what Carl Sagan thought about UFO's. So from what I read, he didn't say much, but he obviously knew about the time problems with interstellar travel, plus I'm thinking, how about the logistics of such an "extended" trip (what if your craft hits a cloud of debris? As the British say, that might be a spot of bother!)? But his conclusion I believe was the same as mine about the UFO's.

Finally the distance to the nearest star in our hundreds-of-billons-of-stars galaxy is THAT FAR?!?!? And there are how many galaxies? We really have little idea how vast our known universe is. What if the universe is infinite? Or does a wrap-around and is continuous that way? Whew! All I know is that "Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together." (Isaiah 48:13 KJV)

This is a variation on something I posted a while back.

The Democrats want a $3.5 trillion bill.

10/02/21 09:45 AM #22406

Steve Keene

David,

According to Lowell and the Democrats, if we would spend a trillion dollars on research to make our paper twice as thin, we could cut the size of the deficit in half.

Then, if we would eliminate the money in circulation we could eliminate the debt.

Their other proposed solution is to use nuclear bombs to move the moon closer to the earth.

Biden has also decided to eliminate abortion by giving people a check for every kid they have.  So illegal immigrants with 7 kids get almost 1800.00 a month.  So if you can procreate instead of gettmg a jpb, you have it made.  Babylon Bee says Biden has decided to slow border crossing by eliminating the gift baskets given to illegal aliens.

10/02/21 11:32 AM #22407

Janalu Jeanes (Parchman)

Steve,

The gift baskets amount to food in Catholic Charities holding areas & our government gives money to Catholic Charities to pay for those services, a T-shirt from the same place, plus showers and extra re-cycled clothing, bus fare or, even better, a ticket for airline travel at 2:00 AM going to your choice, pocket money for most everyone, which is from $100-$200 usually, an Obama phone to many with ankle bracelets, disposable diapers and formula when necessary, sometimes a trip to the emergency room for pregnancy needs or birth, Covid, or dehydration, & other diseases when noticed at holding areas, etc., etc., etc.............plus a note inside those baskets to inform that all gifts are from the generosity of the American taxpayer, which may be used for toilet paper useage in certain locales.........

Money grows on trees in our backyards, thank goodness!

Janalu, 5 year old with mom at home and 2 year old...mom I think begged them to take me as all my buds were going in the first grade.   It was Fairfax Va school district...heralded as the best...but they had no kindergarden yet...So, I got in on tail end of the age for admission...best I can figure...

It was probably as mistake as I was just a little behind for the age group both mentally and physically.

I guess it all worked out....except for my bombarded shoulders from all that hard hitting football...everyone was bigger than me for a long time....

I remember one hit directly on Keith Kelly...and one sideswipe block in the defensive secondary from Ronnie Knight...both in 10th grade....

JV team with Rosebourough and Huffman...purchase of a shiverpad for elbowing hits on opponents came along after those two hits banged me up pretty good.

Huffman and Roseborough would have the entire JV team jump offsides on purpose on first line of scrimmage play with an elbow shiver to the other teams offensive line....We took the 5 yard penalty on purpose just to set the toughness stage...We were crappy, so we had to do something....

I saw ace guitarist Derek Doggett for the 37th time last week. He had a Monkees t-shirt on, and I'm thinking, "Excuse me?!?". At a break he's telling me that he went to their farewell concert (Michael Nesmith & Mickey Dolenz - neither played an instrument, but had a band) here recently and that they were his group that he loved. WHAT!?!?!?! We agreed that Nesmith was really great. But then he's telling me that Peter Tork was a great musician too and was a many-instrument multi-instrumentalist from childhood. Sure enough, Wikipedia showed that. His best friend was Steve Stills (according to Derek) and they roomed together. Many of us remember that Stills auditioned for the Monkees but was turned down. And so then Tork went and got the job. Derek said the reason was that Stills didn't have "good teeth" so not good for the TV show, but Tork's teeth were fine. Anyway Derek's saying how, once you get beyond their pop songs, they had some really great music & albums. Also he was saying that drummer Dolenz is in addition an EXCELLENT guitarist - if he's saying this, I'm gonna doubt it? He said that their later albums were all great, and all the Nesmith stuff is always great, but a lot of the other stuff as well. I told him that I was not believin' all this that I was hearing, and he said that yeah, he told somebody else about that and he couldn't believe it either - same reaction that I had. I never watched that awful TV show beyond maybe a couple of episodes? That show along with Batman and Laugh In were not shows I had much interest in. Laugh In was not funny much at all to me. Batman was kinda interesting with some of the stars who were the villains, like Burgess Meredith and Cesar Romero.

My parents lived in greater Chicago for 2 years in the mid 70's not long before he retired - they moved back to Dallas after that for their 3rd & last sojourn in that city - they both died there near Midway & LBJ where my brother now lives. But he and I were in the Shedd Aquarium by Lake Michigan there one day and saw Cesar Romero by himself (he was gay - duh) also looking at the sea life. These old women spotted him and went up to him. He was smiling and very gracious to them, and then after they departed, he's frowning and gesturing like, good riddance! hahahahaha!!!! After seeing that incident, we didn't approach him.

I remember this one by Nesmith and always loved it:

Will you's (New Jersey childhood) STOP worrying about $ ? We've got Joe, Kamala, Nancy, Chuck, but MOST IMPORTANTLY the unholy trio (SssssssssS like a snake) of $oro$, (Bernie) SanderS & the SquadmemberS ON IT! I was thinking about Australia or New Zealand last year as a place to run & hide, but now from what I'm hearing, they're ALREADY FULLY WOKE with people getting taken face to the pavement for not wearing facemasks!!! And New Zealand had TWO new cases of the China virus and went back on lockdown?!?!? Ay chihuahua, oy vay, ay ya (Chinese), mein gott all rolled into one, with an emphasis on getting rolled!!!! Forget Diogenes and looking for an honest man...does anybody know anybody else who's left on the world stage that's sane?

I forgot to mention about what Carl Sagan was saying, and just from that one article, wow, that guy really was super smart with what was written. But anyway he also was emphasizing that the scientific evidence definitely points to an intelligence behind the design & creation of things. However he also mentioned there how he couldn't buy into the concept of the Guy in the Sky, etc. Of course, even with his prodigious intellect, I read elsewhere once his specific view of God, deity, etc. - missed it by a light-year! I believe the human brain is the most complex thing we're aware of in the universe, but I'm reminded of that important verse: "“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts." Amen. (Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV).

Oh, and I found a better sounding version of that Tammy Wynette song about a page and a half ago so I replaced it; maybe this version was from the LP & the other from a CD? But I just LOVE to find an unknown jewel like that - that's the kind of song I can just listen to over and over again.........as I have been the last couple of days.

Judye Livings,

You quilting skills are terrific!  That is a fabulous creation you made for Jim!

Have you talked with Carla Peters about the quilting group she enjoys quilting with, near her home?

Jim,

It's wondeful to see you smiling and feeling better after your ordeal from a while back, when you were slammed by chemo's caustic affect on the human body.  I'm glad you have had an easier time with the second round.  Hope the rest of the treatments go equally as well as your second one.

My sister had to have chemo too, and lost her hair, eyebrows and eyelashes for a while, but gained them all back soon afterward.  She even had curly hair when her hair began to come back, which was so weird, because before her chemo treatments, her hair was straight for her whole life!  The medical staff said that was not so unusual, as they had seen such a phenomenon before in some of their patients.

Maybe you will have curls like Rand Paul around Christmas time!

10/04/21 10:38 AM #22415

Jim -- A coworker went from light brown and gray straight hair to curly dark brown hair after chemo.  She looked years younger and joked about her cosmetic treatments having too many negative side effects.

All:

A neighbor who is probably between 55 and 60 started looking much fitter recently.  I've know him 25 or so years, since his now grown son was a Cub Scout.  We see one another most days when he walks in the morning when I walk the dogs.  Last week I asked him how he was looking so good:  he said he had read about a push up challenge, where the goal is to do 30 push ups a day.  He was a starting linebacker on his high school team and was always effortlessly strong and fit as a young man, then got weak and flabby as he aged, like lots of us.  When he started the challenge, he couldn't do a single regular push up -- he was only able to do standing push ups against a wall.  Now he does 50 regular push ups every morning before his walk and looks ten years younger.

I thought that was a good idea and figured that I was a lot fitter than he was.  I walk at least 30 minutes a day before breakfast with two energetic dogs and ride a bike for at least an hour every evening without getting really tired even though a good part of it is sprinting with Winston the high energy Aussiedoodle.  Saturday, I did the push ups -- over a twenty minutes or so in four sets of rapidly decreasing numbers, with my arms trembling by the end of the last set.  I felt pretty proud of my fitness.  Sunday, I had trouble lifting my arms above my shoulders and my upper body throbbed, but I took that as a sign that I'd done good exercises and was getting stronger.

The whole good feeling fell apart last night when I tried to repeat the push ups.  When I went down for the first one, my arms just collapsed and I fell on my face:  I couldn't do a single one.  I tried one on bent knees, like girls did in pe:  unsuccessful in getting off the ground, again, but at least I didn't fall.  Now I'm wondering how long, if ever, it will take to recover my normal weak state.
