Thanks to all of you for your texts, emails, prayers and thoughtfulness!
I am doing okay.....all things considered. Two weeks ago today I woke up and began watching television
with Ellen. We were watching just 15 minutes or so, and suddenly a black line moved across the vision field of
my left eye. And then, just as a curtain closes at the end of a play; darkness! At first I squinted and rubbed my left eye and became very worried. I told Ellen: "I can't see, out of my left eye. We should go to to the ER"
She jumped up with an incredulous......very frightened look. So, off we went to ER at the hospital. While Ellen parked I went right up to someone who looked like "staff" and said, "I can't see at all out of my left eye." Very quickly they took my temperature and gave me a different mask to wear as Ellen was walking up. They in turn did the same with her.
Just as quickly, I was directed to lay on a gurney as they rolled me back to triage. (Ellen observed 8 or more personnel attending to me) I was asked to do a series of "dexterity" and strength tests to determine if I maybe had a stroke. I was even asked to smile (probably to determine crookedness)
They ordered a CAT/Scan, and subsequent MRI. I did not have a stroke. However with this passage of time I was fighting a losing battle for regaining my eyesight. (I'm told the window of opportunity is very short) So, in short, I had a blocked artery on the retinal nerve, rendering it necrotic.
So I spent 3 days finding out I may forever lose my vision.
Upon release, I was instructed to see a neuro-opthamolgist who I found after a bit of research.
I've been told SOME of the nerve fibers died....but not all. He sounded very positive he could "bring back" quite a bit of vision, but may "never regain all of it" So, I've been to see this specialist two times and have been on a regimen of special drops. He said I've come further in 10 days than many ever do! He also indicated it would be a slow process.
I'm hopeful though, and lose patience sometimes......and get these monstrous head and neck aches, but also grateful for Ellen, my family and friends like you!!~j
