Sandra, as you may remember, the freeze caused major damage to my brother in law. Retired teacher, 64, now 65, mostly blind and now diagnosed with encepalopathy...which means he's fine, except under pressure not too good on judgement. Also diabetic.
We had to put him in assisted living. A neighbor who knw my wife was a nurse, had an alsheimer's husband who went to a place and we put David there. He likes it because it's safe and secure. Its 9 miles away from us. He is assisted living. A two bedroom with roommate is 3000. His roommate moved out after one month, so he's had it to himself.
They just put another guy in there and his mattress was very smelly, so my b n law got his own place, an efficiency for 3750. They give him his insulin, include meals (covid issues they serve his room) and of course the senior activities.
He has money enough..Just starting medicare and sup with TRS tomorrow...
We sold his house in Houston Woodland Heights. Listed it on Friday...had 15 showings, sold on Sunday, with formal signings on Mondy and closing after two weeks. Cash paid about 15000 above listed offer. It was sold for land value only...but they still wanted to look inside...
I am curious...he had three ambulance bills last year, 2000 3700 and 3200. All related to his freeze collapse and subsequent transfers to ICU rehab, and just rehab. His TRS insurance paid 850 or so, and the rest he is on the hook for. Amulance service is not part of the balance billing/surprise billing laws in Texas, so eventually he will have to pay about 6000 for this. He hit his max out of pocket with TRS at 5600...so actually will be about 11600 out of pocket for all this.
A quick search by me of this issue resulted in about 10 minutes of wasted time. It's apparently too complicated for me, so i am giving up... Something about how much they all charge for various different circumstances, averaged together...I guess that's a good way of doing it...
Well, just updated my mind on ambulance coverage. It's under part B, so all covered. Amazing. There are exceptions (use it too much have to be approved...etc... No wonder non medicare ambulance service is so expensive...They gotta make it up for all the medicare aged folks. I wonder what medicare negotiates with these AMS scumbags...
What does medicare cover (amounts) for ambulance when someone has money? I am guessing the 2000 (which was City of Houston contract,) and the other two have much lower charges negotiated by medicare, so I wonder what's in store there for him and all of us...
