Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

Forums work when people participate - so don't be bashful! Click the "Post Response" button to add your entry to the forum.

My wife's favorite of our seven dogs during our marriage was a golden retriever we adopted in Pennsylvania. We went to the home of people who advertised that they had three pups. When we got there, two of the pups played with each other and ran all over the yard. The third sat next to us. That third one became our Molly. She was a great walker. Stayed right by my side without wandering around and sniffing everything. Only issue -- submissive tinkling. If I raised my voice to her, she piddled.

We adopted a small black dog, also named Molly, from the McKinney SPCA three years ago. She was known to have been abused, and she stayed at that shelter for six months to "normalize" her. We brought her home, but it took a week until she showed any indication of warming up, and then just a little. When my son was in a wheel chair, we were taking him out the front door, and Molly made a break for it. She was down the street and around the corner before we knew it. We put out signs and drove through the area many times without luck. Finally, we got a call from a vet. Molly had been hit by a car and was taken to the vet's office. We were identified by Molly's chip.

Now we have Little Becky the Black Dog, a possible miniature poodle mix whom we adopted from the Plano animal shelter. (They always have plenty of pit bulls because their owners often move to new apartments that don't allow pit bulls. We didn't want a pit bull.) Becky was bald on the back third of her body when we got her, and had bad teeth, eight of which had to be removed. But she turned into a great dog, except for bullying me to walk her twice a day.

In Praise of Beer

"When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.”
Paul Horning

Fans would be shattered. I think, it is better to drink this beer & let dreams come true, than be selfish & worry about my liver.”

Babe Ruth

"24 hours in a day and 24 beers in a case.  Coincidence? I think not!”
H. L. Mencken

"When we drink, we get drunk When we get drunk, we fall asleep.  When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.  When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.  So, let's all get drunk and go to heaven.”
George Bernard Shaw

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”
Benjamin Franklin

"Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer.  Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.”
Dave Barry

“Beer: Helping ugly people have sex since 3000 B.C.”
W. C. Fields

“Remember ‘I’ before ‘E,’ except in Budweiser.”
Professor Irwin Corey

“To some it is a six-pack. To me, it is a Support Group. Salvation in a can.”
Leo Durocher

One night at Cheers a TV Sitcom, Cliff Clavin said to his buddy, Norm Peterson: "Well, ya-see, Normy, it's like this A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells but, naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers!”

David,

I guess Becky is God's way of making sure you ger your daily steps in and helps prevent you from becomming a complete "couch potato".

Probably right, Wayne.

Question:

It seems that Putin thinks that the Russian-speaking part of Ukraine should be part of Russia. Doesn't that remind you of Hitler and the Sudetenland?

Well, I'm re-thinking my computer decision/indecision. Dell has a Presidents' Day sale. Vostro 5890 with 10th generation i7, 16MB cache, 8 cores, 16 threads, 16GB of RAM, 256GB SSD + 1 TB HDD, Nvidia GeForce GT730 graphics card. $1,712. On sale for $839.

It's more computer than I need -- by a lot. But it seems like a great computer. It's a great deal, and it's new.

Can someone talk me out of this?

Janalu Jeanes (Parchman)

Go for it, David!  You deserve it and since it's a good deal, why not?

Unless it's too big for your office space.......

Just because it's more than what you need is no reason to stop yourself.  I'll bet you will find that all the new bells and whistles will be useful for you, even if you need to take an application class, no?

If you found a great car for a good price while shopping around, wouldn't you buy it?   If it had that automatic driving capability on it, wouldn't you think that was a possible advantage at a future date, even though you enjoy driving and steering your car?  Maybe at a future date, you might decide to try the steering deal while out on a country road, tooling around and sightseeing the bluebonnets and pretty milkmaids, or the Ipanema gal.....

I'm sick of all these sleep disrupters, the anti-log rhythmers led by real zeros peddling imaginary numbers.

Our last four dogs were very different experiences:

The two purebread standard poodles were about the same -- we paid a lot of money and got a dog, after an application to a breeder and them watching us with the little puppy.  We had to sign papers about AKC registration, breeding, and showing.  Bear grew up into a 74 pound gentle giant who lived to be 12 and died of cancer.  I still miss him.  Ari is 2, weighs 52 pounds, and is sweet and high energy.  He's also the little brother of our Aussiedoodle, who follows the other one's lead -- even though Ari is a head taller and 10 pounds heavier.

Baby was a little terrier mix my daughter traded a couple of CDs for when she saw how her boyfriend's buddy's pothead girlfirend was abusing her -- left her tied up out in the snow in Shreveport.  She was pretty feral when we got her -- she peed all over and fear bit.  It took a lot of love to turn her into a sweet little thing along with doggie sweaters when it was a bit chilly.  She and Bear became a fun couple -- a fuzzy 15 pound blonde dog who looked like a big Yorkie with a hulking black best friend. We didn't know how old she was when we got her, but we had her 13 years.

Winston the aussiedoodle is a rescue.  We got him from poodle rescue at 10 months old.  They were worried that he was uncontrollable.  We filled out an online application, got a recommendation from our vet, then a rep from the rescue brought him to our house, after telling us that they got him from an older woman who couldn't control him and that they'd had several applications who had met him and couldn't deal with his energy.  He has blue eyes and an incredibly expressive face and I fell in love.  We paid $300, then they had him stay with us for a week to see if we meshed.  He is the most awesome dog I've ever known -- the smartest dog I've ever known, the most affectionate, the most playful, and the most energetic.  We walk for half an hour in the morning and bike ride for at least that long in the evening -- for an hour or more on weekends.  He runs as fast as he can, tucked down like a fullback blasting through the line, the whole way on the bike so that I have trouble keeping up with him. Both guys walk together in the morning.  They take turns in the evening.  Ari bounces along in that distinctive standard poodle lope, where he goes fast but seems to be putting out no energy.

Standard poodles are geniuses of the dog world.  They can follow complex instructions (get your leash and wait by the car, etc.), figure out how to do things like work door latches and turn on TVs, and have minds of their own.  Ari is a typical standard poodle, but, almost unbelievably, Winston is a distinct step smarter. Winston seems to consider Ari his pet.  (On the "I love Aussiedoodles" Facebook group, in addition to the obvious one of calling them Awesome-doodles, "little Einsteins" is another nickname.)  Winston can do "get Ari, we're going for a walk" -- and be at the door with the leashes in his mouth and Ari with him.

Kurt, I forgot to mention something in the dog posting. Before we adopted the dog that was subesquently run over, we tried to adopt a golden retriever through a rescue organization. They wanted to talk with our vet, and they found out that we hadn't kept current with heartworm medication on our previous dog. They disqualified us! Oh, well. It worked out well for us.

Separately, I saved into my Dell cart the $879 Presidents Day sale computer that I mentioned in my earlier post. I was going to sleep on it. (Not on the computer! The idea of buying it.) I have a history of getting revved up to buy something that I don't really need. This morning I decided to buy the computer. I went to my cart, and the price was now $949. It was a Presidents Day sale, and today is Presidents Day.Why is the price $70 higher? I am displeased. After wasting chat time with both the business lines and personal lines "helpers" at Dell, I've pretty much decided that this is God's way of saying, "Don't buy that computer." I guess I have to wait for God to say, "Buy this one." In that case, may never buy another computer. Geez, I hope God wasn't saying, "You won't outlive the warranty."

I have to put TWO dogs at the top of all time. One when growing up was a Springer Spaniel named Lady. Great dog. Loved all of us, and would do anything to please!

As an adult we bought a Golden Retriever.  Out of a number of pups.....it was SHE who walked over to us, and my ex-wife said......"That's the one." Chloe was one of the smartest dogs I've ever had or been around. I can recall when my Dear old Mom passed away.....I was sitting in the den of our then home, crying by myself. Chloe.....sensing something was wrong, came and rested her nose and left paw on my leg~j

Wayne, when/where is the next RHS game?

Jerry, when we moved to Lubbock, we had to stay in an apartment for a month before we could get into the house we bought. We left our golden retriever Molly with my sister in Richardson. During that time, Peggy's cat somehow got caught in the attic and died. While Peggy was crying on the sofa, Molly climbed onto the sofa and put her head in Peggy's lap. Empathy or sympathy? They are great dogs. Wish they were smaller and didn't shed.

6A playoff bracket which includes RHS

https://www.uiltexas.org/basketball/playoff-brackets/boys/6A/1-2

It would appear our path is blocked by Plano and Duncanville's by Belton.   Seems an unfair seeding to me a bit...Also, Mckinney up there at 29 - 5.

Duncanville, Richardson, and Plano could not meet in the finals...

Atasocita is apparently the best Houston area team.   Recently, the beat another team 101-21.  The name of the team they beat?

I just talked to RHS. The next game is Friday night.  If Allen wins tonight the game will be at one of the Plano HS. If Flowermound wins the game will probably at DISD's Loos Field House on Spring Valley.

They suggest if we want to go to the game we need to get tickets as soon as they are avalable. They will call and e-mail me as soon as they get info. Is there a group tha would like to go on a road trip.  We might have to plan some stops fo a 30 min trip.

UT Austin senior wins ‘Jeopardy! National College Championship'

By Sunny Tsai and Ashley McElroy Austin

UPDATED 8:43 PM CT Feb. 22, 2022 PUBLISHED 10:03 AM CT Feb. 22, 2022

AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas at Austin senior Jaskaran Singh steamrolled the competition to win the “Jeopardy! National College Championship” Tuesday.

The senior is currently majoring in finance and business at the Texas McCombs School of Business.

Singh won the grand prize of $250,000. Raymond Goslow of Kennesaw State University won the $100,000 second place prize and Liz Feltner of Northeastern University won the $50,000 third place prize.

Singh found all six of the Daily Doubles and answered both Final Jeopardy questions correctly in the two-game championship.

During one of his games prior to the finals, he was the only contestant with the correct response to the following: “Introduced in 1928, this character has a disappointing affair with a writer before she begins a more satisfying relationship.” It was in the “Characters in Banned Books” category.

“I was initially pretty sure it was Lady Chatterley and was writing it down as soon as the clue was revealed. With about five seconds left, I thought I may have messed up, but I didn’t have a better answer,” Singh said. “So I went with it, and it worked!”
