Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

Forums work when people participate - so don't be bashful! Click the "Post Response" button to add your entry to the forum.

We are good.  I must say we catch the flavor of your convictions on your facebook feed as well as your health situations.  You may not always be posting, but some of us have you on our radar.

The school experience I shared was not mine, although we definitely had outstanding teachers at RHS.

Yes, I thought I had seen that feed on Facebook some time back as an experience shared by someone at their school in olden times.

A great story line.

So, last night we were experiencing a thunderstorm. No big deal until we saw hail hitting our dining table.

What a nightmare!  Glad to see you two taking it all with smiles, indicating you are strong, capable troopers who endure the bad times with the good, knowing that this too will pass!

Best wishes getting the roofers to make the repairs without a new bill!  Hopefully they will be agreeable and cooperative.

You amaze me David, at how quick you are to capture everything on film, to give the future Cordells official recordings for proof (!) that what has been told can be verified!   Excellent idea!  It is definitely a new age of filmed verification for a litigious society, or for family viewings with grandchildren, who might exclaim, "Get outta here!"

Oh no!!!  Report back soon on what the roofers say.  That lovely room.

Not sure about a warranty for a loss caused by a storm.  There may be limits and exclsuions on a warranty.  Like if you were hit by a tornado, the roof warranty would be superfluous.

A casualty loss, probably homeowners.   Most in Dallas have 1% deductible.  Replacement cost coverage.  Call your roofer and he will probably get the contract.   (1% is 1% of dwelling coverage, say 400,000 x 1% or 4000.)

After all said and done be sure to follow up with insurance carrier about recovering replacement cost if they deduct for depreciation...Some carriers pay that part of a claim after work done.

Multiply that by 80,000 homes and you have a mild hurricane hitting Houson area.

Of course if it is a defect in construction job....but happened during a bad storm...close call...

Thanks, Hollis and Lowell,

Roofers arrived at about 9:00 AM yesterday. They remembered our dining table, which was my mother's, and the pool area even though they were here three years ago. The table wasn't damaged.

They taped up the long crack in the skylight and put it back in place. We hope they can install a new one in a few days. It seems pretty clear that the crack wasn't due to the small hail. The skylight apparently wasn't attached properly and either it cracked while the wind ripped it off  the base or when it hit the roof. I think the roofing company will cover the expense. If not, we will just pay for the new skylight. Our deductible is too high for an insurance claim like this.

Careful on those roads, Steve. I got a speeding ticket near Coleman in 2005. It was the second time I received a speeding while listening to Steppenwolf's Born to Be Wild. Next time I hear that song while driving, I'm just going to pull over to the side of the road.

Separately, I think the concept of "re-imagining" police is a terrible idea, but Martha quipped that the prospect of re-imagining her husband has merit -- an even worse idea.

David,

Sorry about your skylight.  Maybe that's good practice for a BLM looting coming to a neighborhood near you real soon.  With the way I drive on the backroads, the music I am proposing has me reimagining one horsepower at a time.  My biggest problem is staying out of traffic, for when I sometimes doze off I can get half a football field into the prairie or desert before I catch myself.  My truck is so comfortable, sometimes it doesn't wake me till I get there.

OK. The dining room is back in binness.

Question: should we add a leaf to the table, remove two chairs, or neither?

08/18/20 03:50 PM #18736

David Cordell

Lance,

The skylight is about four feet squared. However, our roof is very steep, so it is a long way from the skylight down to the ceiling of the dining room -- maybe 15 feet. There is an upside down funnel that goes from the skylight down to the opening in ceiling of the dining room. The opening in the ceiling of the dining room is about four times as large as the skylight. Heavy, swirling winds were blowing the rain such that it didn't just fall straight down from the skylight. Hence, water was dripping all over the place, including down the sides of the funnel.

We're just lucky that it happened last Sunday rather than the previous Sunday, when we were out of town. Everything is back to normal, except for the skylight itself. I think the tape on the crack in the old skylight is sufficient for the next few days until the skylight is replaced.

Who remembers this?

Remember that 7-11 right down at Belt-Line and Coit that we all went to? Well at that time, there was a frozen drink they sold - - it was called an ICEE....sound a little bit off?

They even sold (or gave away - the memory's not quite sure about this) buttons (I do remember that everyone wore different buttons in those days) that said "I slurped and ICEE!". However, as time went by, at some time or the other, Mr. M started selling ICEEs and 7-11 started selling Slurpees. I don't know how or what corporate decision was made, but that seems to be the way it stayed - except for what I consider the disappearing act of the Mr. M stores.

I don't know why I thought of that, but I do remember wearing the buttons. And of course every convenience store has some type of slushee drink these days and the history seems to have fallen through the cracks.

I may not remember the name of all the one hit wonders from that time, but for some reason, this memory pushed itself through a crack somewhere this weekend and there you have it!

08/18/20 10:41 PM #18738

David Cordell

David W.,

Do you remember? Back then, the name 7-11 referred to the opening and closing time of the stores. I'm not sure that I remember Mr. M, but I remember a Cabell's convenience store on Greenville across from Safeway.

Next door to that 7-11 was a barbeque place, the name of which I can't remember because I've had two glasses of wine. On their anniversay they would sell a po-boy and root beer for a buffalo nickel.

Here is the answer to your Icee/slurpee question

Machines to make frozen beverages were invented by Omar Knedlik in the late 1950s. The idea for a slushed ice drink came when Knedlik's soda fountain broke down, forcing him to put his sodas in a freezer to stay cool, which caused them to become slushy. The result was popular with customers, which gave him the idea to make a machine to help make a "slushy" from carbonated beverages. When it became popular, Knedlik hired artist Ruth E. Taylor to create a name and logo for his invention. She created the Icee name and designed the original logo, which is used today. Early prototypes for the machine made use of an automobile air conditioning unit.[1]

After a successful trial of Icee machines in 100 stores,[2] 7-Eleven in 1965 made a licensing deal with The Icee Company to sell the product under certain conditions. Two of these were that 7-Eleven must use a different name for the product, and that the company was allowed to sell the product only in 7-Eleven locations in the US, a non-compete clause ensuring the two drinks never went head to head for distribution rights. 7-Eleven then sold the product that in 1966 became known as the "Slurpee" (for the sound made when drinking them). The term was coined by Bob Stanford, a 7-Eleven ad agency director.

Your posts reminded me of the margarita machine and drink...apparently folklore has it being named after Rita Hayworth...

Lowell and Wayne,

I like Margaritas but I LOVE Rita Hayworth. Very glamorous. Great dancer. Most famous role was Gilda. She once lamented, "Men go to bed with Gilda, but they wake up with me." Hmm. I would have been happy with either!

(Just the first 1:20 of this one.)

In this one, she doesn't start dancing until about 1:50.

Lance,

See Heather Mac Donald's book, THE WAR ON COPS to get the truth about police killings of unarmed Black victims.

The Democrat Party is NOT telling the truth about the whole issue, but prefers to "kick up fear of police among Blacks," even more than usual, during this election time period.

She has done an enormous study, and the study is considered the best to date.

Find her study online......

Lance,

I just read a headline of a newpaper that said, " The election this year is a repeat of the 2016 election, except that this time it is the time of THE NATIONALISTS vs. THE GLOBALISTS."

And Soros is fully backing and funding the Globalists.

It is rumored that he is behind the funding of the antifa thugs in  Portland, and is putting them up in motels each night, so that they can resume their favorite activities each night.

I very quietly confided to my best friend that I was having an affair.

She turned to me and asked, "Are you having it catered?"

And that, my friend, is the sad definition of "OLD"!

Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked,

"How old was your husband?"

"98," she replied: "Two years older than me"

"So you're 96," the undertaker commented.

She responded, "Hardly worth going home, is it?"

I've sure gotten old!  I have outlived my feet and my teeth

I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement,

new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes

I'm half blind,

can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine,

take 40 different medications that

make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts.

Have bouts with dementia.

Have poor circulation;

hardly feel my hands and feet anymore.

Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92.

Have lost all my friends. But, thank God,

I still have my driver's license.

#5

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape,

so I got my doctor's permission to

join a fitness club and start exercising.

I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors.

I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But,

by the time I got my leotards on,

the class was over.

An elderly woman decided to prepare her will and told her preacher she had two final requests.

First, she wanted to be cremated, and second,

"Wal-Mart?" the preacher exclaimed.

"Why Wal-Mart?"

"Then I'll be sure my daughters visit me twice a week"

Lance,

I didn't see either one, as I couldn't stomach the filmed fiasco.  I did however see the talking heads afterwards, and they presented outtakes of the highlights.  I saw that Obama was delivering his speech in his usual "slick' style, so very sure of himself, and so sure that everyone enjoys and appreciates his suave, polished, erudite tripe, everyone except me, and my favorite friends.  He presents his lies so well, doesn't he?  He's so smooth that he even pauses, in just the right moments, to let his zingers sink in, down to the bone of those who swoon over the idiotic nonsense, unaware that they've been snookered.

The talking heads were saying how arrogant and mean-spirited he was to admonish a sitting president, only 3 and a half yrs. after leaving office, while past presidents have had much better manners, and have not participated in such rudeness, refraining from faux-pas of that magnitude.

Yes, he was noticed to have been very negative and full of hatefulness, in accordance with his fellow devotees, who worship him.

Kamala, the interviewers said, didn't say much that was noteworthy, but rather talked mostly about her family life instead, which the observers felt was nothing much to indicate what her future directives would entail, leaving them to say her speech appealed mainly to women who think she is 'hot,' and has snazzy style; failing to notice that she is a backbiter, to anyone she feels is in her way.

Kamala has no comparison to Mike Pence's integrity, decency, honesty, experienced record, or family's shared Christian bonding.

If you have reviewed her history in San Francisco or have seen her vicious attacks while on Senate investigative committees recently, you have noticed or witnessed her as her true self; she's a protegee of Barack's counsel for quite some time now, and I suspect he was the one who had the most "say" in her appointment to Biden's team.

Did you read about Mayor Brian Snedecor of Hobart Indiana, who has swtiched from being a Democrat to being a Republican because he said his Christian faith has caused him to make the change, being unable to stay true to his religious beliefs, had the turnabout not happened.

It was John Adams who told us in 1798, that "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.  It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

By the way, you need to print on the other forum, Trump's long list of accomplishments, since they are unaware that Trump has ANY accomplishments, and you need to add the lastest news of what Trump's team has completed recently, between the UAE and Israel, a shining star of triumph.

Janalu Jeanes (Parchman)

Lance,

What else can you say?  Can you say you want a one-size-fits-all healthcare program managed by the same people who manage the US Postal System?  Can you say you don't mind waiting for a medical procedure in a waiting line that may hold you up for 6 months or more, and even after waiting in line, you may find out that a highly specific piece of equipment you need for treatment is not available because of its price tag?  Can you say that even though you need a specific, very costly drug to manage your health problem which might even lead to your death, you want to hear someone tell you, "Sorry!  We don't furnish that drug to our patients becuse it is WAY too costly, so we will give you a drug that will give you a little more survival time, but that's about as good as we can do for you.  Again, so sorry, sir!"

If you desire to fly to another country that has the drug you want, or the specialized equipment you need, you will have to do that with money out of your pocket.  Hope you've got a large savings account!

So what do you say to the folks who want to eliminate the health program you now have, and tell you there is only one program in the US for everyone, and everyone gets basically the same treatment, which they will claim is fair?  Do you feel that's fair?  Or do you say, "That is a program that may be fairly adequate, but it is not fair to be forced into it."

Of couse you understand that the elite members of our Congress, former presidents and family members, and Deep State civil servants, get a wholly different health plan; an all-inclusive plan that YOU and every other taxpayer has prepaid for them.  They would never settle for the heath plan they are forcing YOU and the rest of us to have.

If you are a person willing and able to pay for a program that specifically meets your personal needs, you are a person who will NOT be able to get health insurance in the US, but can travel to another country accepting you, and pay whatever costs they will charge, if you feel you can manage that scenario.

Hopefully you won't be in a wheelchair or have limited mobility, at the time of your medical neediness.....
