Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

Forums work when people participate - so don't be bashful! Click the "Post Response" button to add your entry to the forum.

One of the things my wife does every year with our grandchildren is to place two small American flags on either side of the sidewalks for our neighbors.  They do this for about a dozen houses.  Then they line the road passing in front of the firestation with these same flags.  This is for about a block.  I would guess they put out 40-50 flags.  It is always nice to drive up the street and see all of the flags.  Hopefully it is also a teaching moment for the kids.  They've done this for the past 6-8 years.

Here's wishing everyone a Happy 4th of July and what it REALLY means to each of us today.

Freedom of speech is very evident on the Forum(s). While we are experiencing the most difficult times in our lifetime, with Covid 19 and loss of life, jobs and in general hardship on the masses, we still seem to endure. Faith is at the core of our country's belief. In God We Trust is on our currency. Today on Independence Day , even more than before "e pluribus unum" ( out of many, one) rings out louder than normal. Fireworks are symbols of the fight and war for freedom and are welcome sounds and sight.

With so much that is wrong with our country today, I still salute our soldiers, our front line health workers and our democracy that was given to us nearly 250 years ago. Yes, I wish we had a third political party (my own personal belief), but a least we have a democratic society with "Checks and Balances" accounting for a two party system. So regardless of your political beliefs, for this one day join together and rejoice in our freedom to be who we want to be.

God Bless America

Two songs I am reminded of that are GREAT songs for today are; Lee Greewood's I'm Proud To Be an American and a lesser known song that is my FAVORITE; BJ Thomas' These Colors Won't Run. These Colors Won't Run was produced by a close personal friend of mine, Ted Rea (CEO of The Triland Group/Dallas). Please go to YouTube and check them out.

Hollis,

Our pool looks great, but I don't swim. Too much work. I stand in the shallow end and put my reading material on the deck. This comes after my two-mile walk with Becky the Dog. Usually on Saturdays I get in the sauna between the walk and the pool. I catch up on my newspaper reading there. I perspire so much in the sauna that I wouldn't take any other reading matter in there.

Kurt,

In the photo of my house, the two flags next to the street were placed by a real estate agent and there was marketing item attached. (Actually, we saved one of her flags from last year.) Three cheers for your wife for a selfless and patriotic act that is a wonderful example for your grandchildren.

Separately. Recent diversions --

Watching the musical 1776, as is our wont on July 4. We saw a live performance at Ford's Theater in Washington about 20 years ago with the same person playing Benjamin Franklin -- Howard da Silva.

Watched Hamilton last night on Disney Plus. We saw it live at State Fair Music Hall, and I've almost paid off the loan for the tickets. The filmed version of the play has the original Broadway cast and the advantage of close-ups. Disney Plus is only $6.99 per month, and it is certainly worth one month's fee for Hamilton. Even if you have a really good ear for rap music, I strongly recommend using subtitles.

Earlier this week we decided to watch All of Me, starring Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin. I think Martin's physical comedy in that movie was extraordinary. Really good movie. Funny. The morning after we watched the movie, I learned that Carl Reiner, the director of the movie had just died.

Hollis and Janalu,

My daughter caught the biggest fish on Lake Fork today beating her husband. He caught some baby stripers.  She used my bass tackle box full of new and old lures.  I bet I have trouble getting those back.  I am a hero for now.  Like father like daughter.

See how many of these celebrities you can identify from this 1970 John Wayne special. It's just 2+ minutes.

Steve,

That's a nice black bass, caught by your daughter!  Did she fillet it?  They're mighty tasty!

The biggest one I caught was a 5 and a half pounder, many a year ago, when I used to go with Charles.  That pretty much ended when our kids were born.

My favorite lure was called 'the pregnant O."  It always brought some good ones my way!

Janalu,

She caught that one on a plastic shad crank bait.  Her husband caught baby strippers on jitterbugs ( top water). They were going to eat it, but I think it's just an appetizer.

Steve -- From the photo, it looks like you were at Slanted Lake, which is similar to Casa Magnetica  that used to be at  Six Flags over Texas.

Meanwhile, here's an easy quiz. What do these women have in common:

Anna, Eleanor, Julia, Lucy, Madonna, Maggie Mae, Martha, Michelle, Pam, Prudence, Rita, Sadie.

First to respond with the correct answer wins the self-satisfaction of sharing knowledge without any expectation of pecuniary enrichment.

Hollis, I forgot to thank you for the compliment about the house. Here is a photo of our back "yard", which of course is not really a yard, taken this morning (just after a brief shower) through the breakfast room window. (No, the shower didn't go through the window.)

Steve, this is "Slanted Pool".  (I figured you would point that out.)

For those who like Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA, you will really like this version.

All names from Beatles songs?

Maggie Mae is Rod Stewart. Hmmm.

David,

Are those names the names of wort hogs?  Arkansas pets?

07/05/20 01:02 PM #18422

David Cordell

Hollis, you are correct, of course -- Beatles recordings. Maggie Mae is not the same as Rod Stewart's, and nowhere near as good. Also, I never knew the name of the song Polythene Pam, even though I've heard it a thousand times. I often have difficulty discerning the lyrics in song.

Ha! That's Luann Foster (sister of Linda Foster Gadd) and Steve Gardner at Brenda Brown Dickey's house, July 24, 2009. Surprise birthday party arranged by my wife and Brenda.

Steve,

I forgot to mention what a great shot that is of you with the beautiful background. And, The "Marlboro Man" has nothing on you!

Susie and I have just finished Vikings.   Before that it was Downton Abbey.  Now, we started Hanna season 2, but we realized we had forgotten season 1, so we re watched that.  We are at season 2 episode 5.

Coffee, paper, emails, facebook, RHS and Pun forums, water the garden, bicycle, cook, clean, monitor insurance customers, cook, clean, buy a scratch off, fend off physicians and pharmacies, take pils, binge watch from chair, binge watch from couch, dream of ice cream (HEB creamy creations is best,) go to bed.

Is that all there is?

Golf in the plans but so hot.

Edit.  Crap.  just chipped my tooth with my tongue.

I guess old people don't deserve teeth.  Criminy.

Help!

Need gas cooktop to replace 32" ceramic. Can't find 32" gas cooktop. Cutout in granite is too big for 30" cooktop. Cabinet is too small for 36" cooktop. Any ideas?

Jerry: Don't want to drop any spoilers for those who haven't yet watched all Ozark episodes, so one name only - Darlene.

Hollis,  Oh yes! I won't spoil it either.
Speaking of "Darlene".......the girl I had my first crush on was Darlene. It was in the 5th

grade! And she had nothing to do with Jerry.....until we were about to move from "The Cliff."

to Richardson! I just shrugged my shoulders. Oh well!

Lance,

We found out that it will cost over $2000 just to get gas to the site of the stove. Electricity is looking a lot better.

Sent to me by a non-posting classmate.

---------------------

This is an e-mail sent to Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune after an article he published concerning a name change for the Washington Redskins.

Dear Mr. Page: I agree with our Native American population. I am highly jilted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward.

Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns.

The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. It's offensive to us white folk.

The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men's lives. I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.

Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!

Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children.

The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children. The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children.

The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying. Wrong message to our children.

So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing Congress loves.

As a die-hard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women's athletic teams to something other than "the Beavers (especially when they play Southern California. Do we really want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers?

I always love your articles and I generally agree with them. As for the Redskins name I would suggest they change the name to the “Foreskins" to better represent their community, paying tribute to each and every last dick-head in Washington D.C.

Lance,

I'm waiting for a Green New Deal solar cooktop with instantaneous response time similar to that evil fossil fuel, natural gas.

I had gas from 84 to 2011.   Loved it.  My contractor talked me into electric.  Hate it.  One burner out.   Looking to gas.  We have both hookups.  Double check to see if gas is already there.   Consumers says invection best.   Hey, you might ask Randy Combs.  Handy man expert.
