I have been reading and watching about the Atlanta battery plant Hyundai/LG Korean investment. It is about a 4.3 billion dollar investment and is just one of about 20 other major similarly funded plants S. Korean companies have started as part of their agreements (both in this and past admins.) with the US.
The Korean workers (and some Chinese, Japanese, and Indonesian) numbered about 430. The Koreans all were sent back to Korea yesterday (except one who chose to stay.)
All but 45 or so of these workers were here to train, help set up, and advise the coming workers as well as finalize the building of the plant. The subcontracting companies said, get to the US by hook or crook...somehow so you can work.
All of these 21 or so multi billion dollar investments by Korean companes are new builds/new plants.
Workers were mostly unable to obtain the proper work visas because of the cumbersome process the US has evolved into as a result of political pressure via US immigration laws and procedures. Since they have been coming over here for a few years, it's a combination of the two administrations lack of proper procedure.
It has given the US a black eye to Korea. Supposedly one of our few allies...considering their bordering N. Korea, our military pressence there, as well as the obvious desire by Korean companies to invest here, as a way of "paying back?" the uS for being their friend.
The failure of the US Congess to forge an updated immigration policy (the last time done was during Reagan,) in this everchanging World economic state at the same time begging other countries to make deals with us is rather sloppy, embarassing, and isolationist.
Please, someone, at least get an updated foreign worker immigration plan fast so we can continue to handle the needs of business who count on that labor...both for building up new plants and companies and for continuing operations within our economy. This is congressional and should be by partisan...
