WHEN WILL IRAN STRIKE ISRAEL?
JEWISH DAY OF MOURNING - THE 9TH DAY OF AV
As the world awaits Iran’s military response to escalate a regional war with Israel, the exact date remains unknown. However, history may provide some clues. August 12 is the 9th of Av, which has Biblical significance to both Israel and her enemies as a targeted date to bring mourning to the Jewish people. Below are 3 interesting perspectives to consider…including a military strike planned after the close of the Olympics in Paris: the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the history of the 9th of Av, and other Biblical prophesies that are aligned and potentially fulfilled in 2024 during this conflict.
Iran Update, August 6, 2024, ISW
The Iran Update provides insights into Iranian and Iranian-sponsored activities abroad that undermine regional stability and threaten US forces and interests. It also covers events and trends that affect the stability and decision-making of the Iranian regime. The Critical Threats Project (CTP) at the American Enterprise Institute and the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) provides these updates regularly based on regional events. CTP-ISW defines the “Axis of Resistance” as the unconventional alliance that Iran has cultivated in the Middle East since the Islamic Republic came to power in 1979. This transnational coalition is comprised of state, semi-state, and non-state actors that cooperate to secure their collective interests. Tehran considers itself to be both part of the alliance and its leader. Iran furnishes these groups with varying levels of financial, military, and political support in exchange for some degree of influence or control over their actions. Members of the Axis of Resistance are united by their grand strategic objectives, which include eroding and eventually expelling American influence from the Middle East, destroying the Israeli state, or both.
Iran and its Axis of Resistance would likely use the first wave of the attack on Israel to assess Israeli air defenses in preparation for the second wave of the attack. The April 2024 attack consisted of only one large volley of drones and missiles fired from Iran. [2] CTP-ISW noted on August 4 that Iran and its allies could use multiple attacks targeting Israel to learn and adjust their attacks as they observe how successful they are. [3] Iran and the Axis could adjust the volume or type of projectiles fired at Israel, targets, and launch locations. https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/iran-update-august-6-2024
The Jewish Calendar - 9th of Av
The Jewish calendar includes Av: July–August, 30 days. Tisha B'Av, the Ninth of Av, known as Tisha B'Av, is a significant day of mourning in the Jewish calendar, commemorating several disasters that befell the Jewish people over the centuries. According to the Mishnah (Taanit 4:6), and other historical records, the following events occurred on this day:
The Spies' Report: According to the Torah, on the Ninth of Av, the twelve spies sent by Moses to observe the land of Canaan returned with their report. The Israelites believed the negative report of ten of the spies, which led to their punishment of wandering in the desert for 40 years (Numbers 13-14).
Destruction of the First Temple: The First Temple, built by King Solomon, was destroyed by the Babylonians led by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 BCE. This event marked the beginning of the Babylonian Exile.
Destruction of the Second Temple: The Second Temple, built after the return from the Babylonian Exile and renovated by Herod the Great, was destroyed by the Romans under the leadership of Titus in 70 CE.
The Fall of Betar: The fortress of Betar, the last stronghold of the Bar Kokhba revolt, fell to the Romans in 135 CE. This event marked the final suppression of the Bar Kokhba rebellion.
Plowing of Jerusalem: After the Bar Kokhba revolt, the Roman Emperor Hadrian established a pagan city, Aelia Capitolina, on the ruins of Jerusalem and ordered the area to be plowed over. This was seen as a desecration of the Jewish holy city.
These events are traditionally observed with fasting, mourning practices, and reading the Book of Lamentations, which laments the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple.
The Ninth of Av (Tisha B'Av) falls on different dates in the Gregorian calendar each year because the Jewish calendar is lunar-based. Tisha B'Av typically occurs in late July or early August. Here are the dates for Tisha B'Av for a few recent years:
