It would seem to me that your concern for your daughter's understanding is likely linked to your own understanding, which you modeled while she was living at home with Charles and you....true?
Well, you would think so, right?
But.........like I said when I wrote about her reasoning prowess, she is a total opposite from her brother, who was reared right alongside her, during the same basic, early years, only 22 months older. I always expected they would be similar in their behavior, abilities and attitudes, yet, as I stated, they were very different, even when just toddlers. My son was such an easy, cooperative child, eager to grasp what I tried to teach him, while Christie was ALWAYS much more of a challenge, in every way except toilet training. In that area, she caught on to the new concept much more easily than her brother.
She has been a headstrong, stubborn stinker, and rebellious type, a child who nearly always bucked authority, while Robert was not that way at all, most of the time.
Even when she was in high school and a lieutenant of the drill team, her teacher commented to me, one time, that "Christie isn't keen on staying in line all the time, if she thinks she can deviate just a little bit, for a giggle or two, is she?"
I laughed and told her, "I see she has shown her true colors even to you, when knowing you can lower the boom on her!"
We laughed together and talked about how she tries to defy authority often, thinking she can get away with what ever mischief she desires. She has always been keen to try something new, and will always be a dodger, not in a mean way, but in a mischievous, clever way. (she imagines)
Consequently, she NOW doesn't take her voting responsibility seriously enough, in my opinion, but rather she takes short cuts to researching the issues of the day, and she listens to "amateurs-in-the-know," instead of listening to her elders, as she has been taught to do with respect and honor due, as her brother does all the time. (He is always talking about current events and top personalities in the news, with much interest in comparing notes with us, his older relatives, as well as his associates.) Christie talks endlessly with her peer group and her mostly Hispanic associates, then follows along with the herd, but occasionally, she notices the news on TV and radio. She is not a naughty Nanette all the time, but she enjoys "doing her own thing, in her own way."
We love her dearly and realize she has a good, kind heart, mixed with loads of mischief and an adventuring spirit. She adores her young son, and every animal known to mankind, having a wide assortment of critters living with her all the time. Therefore, we just watch over her hoping she stays in legal bounds, maturing a little more each year, observing that "the elders" are not so irrelevant after all!
