Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

Forums work when people participate - so don't be bashful! Click the "Post Response" button to add your entry to the forum.

I think our weather is going to be a little bit colder than that, Lance.  Still and all, watching the game inside with family and friends, while enjoying the occasional adult-beverage, certainly beats being outside in the cold in NewJersey.  Especially without a dog in the fight.

Cantor, that was not a Super Bowl in Green Bay.  It was a chance to be in the first Super Bowl, which was not called the Super Bowl yet.  Green Bay went on to beat Kansas City (formerly Dallas Texans) in the first Super Bowl.  Dallas was the better team though.

Cedarberg's dad would take five of us under 12 to Dallas Texan Games in 60, 61, and 62 and my dad would take five of us under 12 to the Cowboy games in the Cotton Bowl.  The end zones were alway close to full and the reserved seats were alway empty.  There was barbed wire separating the end zone seats (and cops) from the reserved section.  Those corney dogs were great.  I think those 1 adult 5 kids tickets were only 3.75 for all six.  Lenny Dawson, Abner Haynes were the two greatest players for the Texans.  I hated the Cowboys for years after they built Texas Stadium and made attendees have a "bond/licensed" seat.  Cotton Bowl was juicy, nasty, cool.  Dallas at Fair Park was like New Orleans.  Hawkers, seat back sellers, chair back renters, sometimes side shows at the Midway.

The merger of the NFL and AFL was a money grab by the owners, afraid of all the bidding for players between the leagues and the AFL became more successful, stealing draft picks from NFL.  It is odd consdering how much they have to pay players now.  I rember Cowboy Jerry Tubbs had an off season job as greeter and loan officer at Richardson Savings and Loan, and he played BOTH ways for the Cowboys, Center and middle linebacker...and who could forget Eddie Lebaron, 5'7" quarterback.  I remember Frank Glieber calling the plays and I thought he was saying Eddie Lebaron the man hunter, instead of the man under...

Our band played at a Cowboys' game in 1967 when a hurricane or tropical storm made travel impossible for the south Texas band originally scheduled to perform. I may still have the newspaper clipping with a photo of Bobby Hayes going over the railing and crashing into the band's seating area at the end of a pass play.

I also recall going to a Dallas Texans game.  I think they were playing the Boston (later to become "New England") Patriots.  I remember that it was a cold day, but cold and snow no longer bother me.  For the past 22 years I have lived in a town in NW PA that averages about 160 inches of snow annually.  In fact I found that I enjoy cross-country skiing.  My wife tolerates this weather and shares outside recess duty with the other teachers (they stay indoors when the wind chill falls below about 0), but I have the feeling that we will be spending  time farther south once we retire.

Well, I may have lost my mind totally and have already posted this, so if I did I'm sorry-just skip over it. If I haven't though, I wanted to invite any of you to a conference that our church is hosting. It's being done by Cancer Treatment Centers of America and it's called, "Our Journey of Hope" and it's mostly for cancer patients and their families, but all the information can be utilized with any disease.  It is a great conference. It's March 29th, from 8:30-5:30p. Yeah, yeah, I know it's an all day affair! but most families have already had experience dealing with cancer in one way or another. It's a lay-ministry conference so could be used in any church setting or if you or your church is interested in organizing a way to help the sick and those who suffer loss, this is for you. By the way, if you are a NURSE-LOOK   you will receive 7 hours of CEU's for FREE!!!! You can go to the website which is: ourjourneyofhope.com and even sign up there for the conference to be held at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Lucas or by contacting me by email-born4thesecondtime@gmail.com. I will need your name, address, phone, email address and if you go to church, where. Anyone is invited to attend!!

The reason the end zones were full at the Texans game if you were a memember of the Dallas Texan Huddle Club you got in for a $1.00. I would go down early on Sundays with some friends and they would pick ball boys for the visiting team, I leaned so new words on those sidelines.

Being an outside game, I'm guessing they're playing on grass?

The quarterback for the Texans was Cotton Davidson, not Len Dawson.  And don't forget John Robinson in the defensive backfield, EJ Hollub at center, Fred Arbanas was one of the receivers...I was a member of the Junior Texams fan club, too, and well remember those games.  I also remember attending early Cowboys' games in the Cotton Bowl, getting a ticket for a dollar and sitting in the end-zone.  I still don't think they've tackled Jim Brown...

I was also in the Dallas Texans Huddle Club. Note the backfield in the first couple of years: Cotton Davidson was from Baylor, Abner Haynes from North Texas State, and fullback Jack Spikes from TCU.  Apparently, the Texans thought that they would provide additional interest and attendance. (The Cowboys also drafted Don Meredith from SMU and Bob Lilly and Sonny Gibbs from TCU in that era.) I think Len Dawson arrived in the Texans last year in Dallas and quarterbacked them in the championship against Houston. Every time I see a coin toss at a game, I think of Haynes' "We'll kick" choice in the overtime.

I recall standing on the top row of the endzone, looking over the edge. I saw a large sign painted over a doorway on the side of a building in Fair Park. It said "Colored Men" --a restroom. Can still see that image so clearly.

Anyone remember the theme song of the Texans? Maybe someone can add to or correct these lyrics.

The Zing team

Of pro football

The roaring, soaring Texans.

Every spine-tingling,

Ring-a-ding-a-ling

Leather-poppin' play has zing!

Dallas

Texans

Big D's team.

Rack 'em

Texans.

ZZZZZZZZing!

The Dallas Texans!

I remember when I was in fourth grade ('61), I won 2 Texans football tickets at school for something.  Don't remember what I won them for, but I won them. I begged my Dad to take me and he did.  Dad hates football (or any organized sports for that matter) so I felt really special that he took me to the Cotton Bowl to see them play. Must have won the tickets for some really special purpose.  Otherwise, I doubt he would have taken me.  Became a fan of Texans/Cowboys from that moment on.

I remember David that you could name every Dallas Cowboy, his number, his college team, his position on the depth chart, his statistics, etc.  I thought to myself what a useless bunch of information.

Of course, I didn't think it was unusual that I had memorized every street name in order intersecting Hillcrest to Kip's Big Boy on Northwest Highway.  Served me well in later years when I drove a cab and delivered pizzas.  .

Karlan,

You are right! Jim Brown did have some of his best days against us. (if he could be held to close to 100 yds it was considered an accomplishment)

My Dad once took me at age 11 to see Mr Brown and company.(1962) Lebaron and Frank Clark as I recall had a "field day" Don't remember how many yds Brown had that day....but we did take them 45-21!

(but watching Jim Brown was something else! At 6'2 and 232....it was like watching a MAN against boys!)

David forgot the opening;

Give a yell for the AFL

and roaring soaring Texans

Francis Marion ( Cotton ) Davidson played for Baylor. Was drafted by Colts played 54-57. Coached his hometown Gatesville Honets for two years and caught on with the AFL Texans from 60-62. Traded to the Raiders during the 62 season finished his professional career in 68 with the raiders as a backup to George Blanda..

Len Dawson out of Purdue was drafted by the Steelers played 57-60. Released in 60 picked up by the Browns. 1960 he played one season was replaced by Frank Ryan and released in 61. Played for the Texans/Chiefs from 62-75. Davidson was traded to the Raiders midway of the 62 season.

Janalu Jeanes (Parchman)

Rev. Karlan, do you remember dangling our 7th grade teacher's podium out the 2nd story window, using the venetian blinds cord, in English class?  I believe her name was Miss Hartman, a pretty, sweet, young lady, with a fun-loving personality, who giggled at the whole episode, once she came through the class door, that morning.  I think the only admonishment you received that day, was having to stand out in the hall for 15 minutes.  Have you repented for your "rascally ways" of yesteryear?

02/07/14 08:27 AM #271

Karlan Fairchild

Janalu,

I must admit that I've slept since then and really don't recall that particular endeavor, which is a riff-on-a-theme from Don Cannon, but that sounds like something that would've occurred.  Don't know that I've mended my ways, yet, but hope springs eternal.

OK. This will sound prissy unless you are an official member of the grammar police, but there are two grammatical errors that have been driving me crazy. I heard both of them this morning.

Error 1: "This is an issue that should be important to you and I." NO! NO! NO!

Error 2: "If I hadn't played football, I couldn't have went to Stanford." NO! NO! NO!

There are several grammatical errors worthy of capital punishment. Well, I meant that the speaker, not the error, is worthy of capital punishment. But now that I think of it, I think the error should be killed. Never mind. I need to think this through. And don't try to diagram any of these sentences.

Jim Brown.  There was a game that he ran a sweep around the left side that I think he must have been hit six or seven times.  He made it to the end zone.  The next morning, the Morning New had photos of about six or seven Cowboys sprawled out across the field.  I think there was a broken leg, a sprained knee, a lost fingernail, and a concussion or two.  He was by far the best I ever saw.  But it was before the back- as- receiver era.

Used to deliver the Morning News, and for a while the Times Herald, and also substituted a few times on Steve Healy's route on the Richardson Daily News.

Had to collect in those days. A good month was about 70.00 or so...Hard to believe we got up at 4:30, rode bike to the laundrymat on Lindale at Beltline and wrapped those papers...Sundays were tough...Fell on that bike all loaded up (with papers) a few times...

Lowell, that was one of the few Cowboy games I attended in those early years. There were 79000+ at the game--a record for the stadium. I was in the opposite endzone on that run. As I recall, it was a sweep around left end from the 4 yard line and Brown reversed field and scored on the right side. I saw him at LAX in 2000 and walked up to him while he was in line to buy a sandwich. He was wearing one of those African hats. I mentioned that run to him, but I didn't seem to stick out in his mind. My father took me to the 1957Cotton Bowl when Brown and Syracuse played  against TCU, but I don't remember anything about it, other than what I have been told. Someone mentioned to me the other day that Brown is considered by many to have been the best lacrosse player ever.

I didn't recall that you had had a paper route. My brother had a Morning News route and my father and I helped on Sundays. I know that in 1959 the paper boys always met in front of the Ritz (Electra) to roll their papers. A couple of years later he had a Times Herald (afternoon) route. One day he and I threw papers from the hood of a car driven by our neighbor, Jake Trewin. I must have lost my balance, or Jake hit the brakes, but I went flying, landing face first. (No comments like "That explains a lot" please.) Jake and Vic sneaked me upstairs to my bed as if somehow my mother would never notice that I was badly scraped on my left arm and the left side of my face and nose. They were waving fingers in front of my eyes when my mother, who always had a sixth sense, came into the bedroom and started screaming. (That's the only part I remember!) Anyway, it was a mild concussion and I spent only one night in the hospital. Could have been lots worse.
