Steve,
I can remember a friend who brought me to a gym he belonged to in N Dallas. The gym was sizable because it had racquetball courts.
I could hear the ball just exploding off the walls, and thought someone was hitting the "hell" out of the ball!
My friend, without even seeing who it was said: "It's probably Dave Manders. The word around is he's one of the best in Dallas."
Without hesitation, I said "Let's go see for a minute, before we work out."
Sure enough it was indeed Dave Manders! The most impressive thing was not just the velocity. It was how quick this 6'2 250-260lb man was moving around that court! Holy Cow!!
And seems smallish compared to the 300-320 pounders today, but to play racquet ball at that level was very
impressive!
Steve, as you may or may not know, I worked at the Holiday Inn C. (I think our shifts didn't align or you were there at a different time period)
It was a thrill to meet some of the people I "roomed" as a bellman!
When Coach Lombardi took over the then.....Redskins (now Commanders) he and the entire team stayed there.
I roomed Marie and Coach Vince (can remember those wide teeth!) He was not a thing like one would think. Very nice....and very gentlemanly with her. When it came time for the "tip" he said, "Thank you young man" as he handed over the "better than average" amount. Marie cleared her throat (as she had not missed a thing)
He glanced at her, as she nodded towards me.
His words were: "Here, let me give you a little supplement." ( now a sizeable amount!) I thanked them both and said " Good luck Sunday" He winked and nodded.
(I think the Cowboys won!)
Sadly I believe it was his last game, because he lost his battle with colon cancer the following year~j
