David - your post in purple italics, my responses in regular text.
Do you believe in open borders? I do not. I believe that immigration should be controlled and monitored and should be consistent with current law. President Biden is deliberately not enforcing current immigration law.
No, I don’t believe in open borders. I do believe we are in dire need of an updated immigration policy. We need one that will allow businesses to welcome people who are willing to work, contribute to our tax base and take jobs that some are unwilling to take. I also believe that using immigration as a hot bed issue to gain popularity and campaign funding and reelection is the reason we don’t have a policy, and perhaps never will. It is profitable to make an issue of it, spend millions incarcerating, deporting, and prosecuting aliens. If we had a smooth policy allowing people in, it just might save money and human suffering.
No, I don’t believe President Biden is deliberately not enforcing current immigration law. Speaking of the current laws….have you read them? Here is Chapter 1, Subchapter 1A, Part I, if you are interested. If so, exactly how is the Biden Administration deliberately violating those laws? It seems to me, that anyone who is in the US has certain rights when arrested or held in detention. Also, speaking of subverting the law, Abbott is currently using trespassing violations to round up, arrest, detain, and hold without trial, those crossing the border in only certain counties in Texas. Some Judges are throwing these cases out for various reasons. Now they are replacing Judges who only agree with Abbott. Sounds deliberate to me and shady to say the least. Lawful is whatever the current definition is I suppose….
Bottom line to me is this:
- You can’t stop this completely. It is not a black and white issue. Gray areas are all too common and these are people who are desperate. To flee your home, with little children in tow, for near certain arrest, detainment, in deplorable conditions, is desperation.
- It is hugely expensive to have an iron-clad no entry policy. No thick wall, no amount of policy, or ICE will stop this. Only a better robust policy allowing legal immigration and work status will work.
It is easy, common, and unproductive for liberals to deny anything that appears on Fox News. However, perhaps this quotation from Newsweek on Tuesday, providing the same numbers as Fox News, will help:
On Monday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released its migrant encounter figure for December, reporting that authorities confronted almost 179,000 people at the U.S.-Mexico border during the month. That takes the total to over 2 million for 2021.
This figure represents a historic high, with the total outnumbering the combined number of crossings reported over the past two years by over 565,000, according to CBP data.

These are "encounters", which category does not include those illegal immigrants who were not encountered -- the "got-aways" who are not even seen by border patrol agents who are overwhelmed. Hence, Jim's estimate of four million illegal immigrants. But let's pretend that no one sneaked past the border agents. Are you happy with 2 million illegal aliens per year? (Note: illegal aliens, not the euphemism "undocumented immigrants".)
Keep in mind that the combined populations of Austin (962,000) and Fort Worth (928,000) are less than 2 million.
First of all, this is not easy, nor do I feel that what I write or contribute is unproductive. Fox News is in the business to sell news, the more controversy the better. For selling it is, and they make huge sums to keep things stirred up. They are masters at it. So does CNN, MSNBC, and the list goes on. Until we are sick and tired of their crap, it will continue. Secondly, I have not labeled you and your politics at all, so using generalized, insulting descriptions of liberals is not winning your cause to me. Not only that, but quite frankly this is not easy, it can be exhausting, trying to explain one’s politics to someone who is waiting for you to slip up and say something to disagree with. Sigh, I will soldier on, never the less….
Now to Newsweek. The quote you provided used the word, confronted. I wonder specifically what that means. Did that include the multitudes who were parked under the bridge, but eventually turned back to Mexico? Data. Reliable data. Clear reliable data. Ok, let’s say for argument all of these people got into the country. They are roaming our streets as I type this post. There are 2 million of these folks sucking up resources, working at low pay jobs, and reproducing children who will be born here. If they came to Weatherford, they worked at construction jobs. I have no idea how to track them around here. As far as I can tell none of this directly affects me. I would not question, say Firemen Lawn Care (who I used a couple of years ago) who I thought I would get Firemen to cut down my tree, instead I got three able bodied Hispanic men who braved certain death from falling to climb the monster tree and dismember it toot sweet. None spoke English. It was also very expensive. I am sure, the “Fireman” in charge sucked up the profit for himself. I did not ask to see papers. But who knows maybe they were all legal. Either way, the Fireman, was not willing to cut the tree, they were, and by golly they were good, very good at their jobs with no complaint and it was fast, efficient and well done.
You also know of my family and the history of my father’s family immigrating to America. They did it “legally”, though if at the time, the authorities had known that all 10 of them were crammed into a very small apartment, with sleeping in shifts, and little resources, they might have been kicked out. So dirt poor, an orange was a luxury. Yet, if they had stayed in Holland, my grandmother was Jewish, they would have all perished at the hands of the Nazis. Desperation impelled them to leave everything behind and move 10 children to America. I have empathy for immigrants. Period.
Related: do you care at all that the Biden policy is leading to thousands of deaths from fentanyl smuggled through the southern border?
Ok, I care. That being said, I did a very quick search and it turns out that nearly all of the illegal trade in fentanyl is through the mail, although some is smuggled through the border. International mail, from China is where the majority comes from. What is Biden doing about it? So Biden is at fault. Not Trump and certainly not anyone else involved in the previous administration. This must be a new issue. Only a year old. I had no idea. My bad. I will write Biden a letter and see that he gets right on it. I know, snarky. It has been a long day and it is only 2 pm. I am tired of typing and defending myself. Drugs are bad. Fendanyl is very bad. I am sorry so many folks are dying because of it. There. How to solve it immediately? I have no idea. Enforce the law. Yeah, open all those Fedex, UPS and US Mail boxes and find the stuff. Sounds daunting. No easy solution. Stop China from producing the stuff and making huge profits doing it with them putting sanctions on us or disrupting trade, or God forbid, stop huge corporate profits. I am done.
