Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

Forums work when people participate - so don't be bashful! Click the "Post Response" button to add your entry to the forum.

Lance,

Here's my best memory of the posting of the annual. The first effort on the scanning of the annual was by Jean Ward. He posted it on his own website, and I linked to it on a website that preceded this website. For this website, Sandra Spieker Ringo and I scanned/re-scanned/formatted additional pages. I bought some software and Sandra incorporated the scans into the software and posted it on the site.

While mowing the yard I remembered the add I paraphrased earlier from the 70's and 80'

"Is it live or is it Memorex?

I wouldn't want to be accused of plagerism.

Lance,

Good suggestion. I have lately worried that I would die with all my photos digitized, but ultimately discarded. I think I will try to organize them better and copy them onlo thumb drives that I give to my children. I do have cloud storage, but I am not comfortable with any single approach.

With regard to genealogical info, much of it was obtained in a disorganized way. Example: I had limited time at the Texas State Archives and at the Mormons' library in Salt Lake City, and the process was scan as fast as you can. Lots of scans labeled "scanxxxx.pdf".

I had to retire so I would have enough time to begin organizing that stuff.

Here's another one with a similar joking theme (except I do believe both cartoons reflect strong political statements blaming the Bush administration....).  I admit to being a bit sensitive on this one since it appears the cartoonists are fighting the political wars of twenty years ago, while we are currently faced with a number of very bad decisions to leave Afghanistan in a precipitous manner without appropriately planning to evacuate non-combatants.

Lance,

I subscribe to Ancestry and My Heritage. I use Family Tree Maker. I also consult FamilySearch and Wikitree. I have had DNA tested by two different entities.

It's not just about the tree. It's about the lives and the family-related documents, like the one below that I found at the Texas State Archives. The Lacy on the second line was Martha's three-great grandfather, Martin Lacy. He was an Indian Agent and friend of Sam Houston. After some serious issues with the Cherokee, who had moved to East Texas from Oklahoma, Lacy, John H. Reagan, and an interpreter were sent by Mirabeau Lamar to meet with  Cherokee Chief Bowles to tell him that they would have to leave Texas. It was documented in a memoir by Reagan, after whom the high school in Austin was named. Reagan became a U.S. Congressman, then postmaster of the Confederacy, then U.S. Senator.

I can't respect anyone -- Biden --  who consistently blames his predecessor.

Recall that Biden opposed the Bin Laden mission.

The Obama-Biden administration had eight years to fix whatever they deemed broken in Afghanistan, which could have inluded bugging out. It didn't happen.

Note that there were no major attacks from Al Queda in the U.S. since we entered Afghanistan. We had strategic bases in the country. There were no deaths from hostile activity in the 18 months. There were many American citizens and helpful Afghans who were stranded.

Blaming Bush for Biden's spectacular debacle is silly. Further, justifying it by saying that Trump was going to withdraw is laughable when it comes from someone who hates all-things-Trump.

We should have stayed in Afghanistan. If we were to withdraw, it should have been done in a logical way. My guess is that idiot Biden got caught up in the idea of withdrawal and overruled/ignored his advisers.

Even the left is criticizing what happened. Biden is now lying about everything because his psyche must bend reality in a way that will keep his self-image from self-destructing. "Everything is fine." Or, "We had no idea that the Taliban would come in."

I don't like Obama, but as least he is smart. Biden is dumb -- too dumb to know that he is dumb. He should at least be smart enough to listen to smart people. I don't think he is.

Note that supposedly our allies were happy to be rid of Trump and to have a solid guy like Biden, world's leading expert on inernational relations, as President of the United States. They're not so happy now.

Lance,

Even though you DON'T DESERVE IT, PLUS NOW I KNOW YOU COULDN'T CARE LESS, for cryin' out loud, but CHECK OUT this video of Portland-based Jennifer Batten, the best female guitarist in the world I think. I just saw her for likely the last time the night before last. I think this video is WELL WORTH watching in its entirety. Most people probably know that Jennifer toured with & played on albums of Michael Jackson and also she toured with her hero, Jeff Beck.

KABUL—Approximately twelve minutes after U.S. troops withdrew from Afghanistan, Taliban fighters have completely taken over the entire country.

"Woah, that's a bummer," said the Biden Administration's foreign policy team. "We didn't see that one coming."

As the Taliban began its campaign of shooting and killing, as is their time-honored tradition, CNN anchors gushed with praise after noticing all the Taliban fighters were responsibly wearing masks to protect themselves and others from COVID.

"Wow! In the midst of the battle and bloodshed, these noble desert knights of Islamic superiority are wearing masks! Bravo!" said Brian Stelter.

TV anchor and world-renown polemicist Don Lemon was also quick to weigh in. "All things considered, we ought to be praising the COVID-safe masks these majestic mujahideen warriors are wearing," he said.

"They are showing all of us the proper way to behave during a pandemic—something those horrible idiot Trump supporters don't seem to get."

Inspired by their example, the Biden Administration has invited the Taliban to the White House to record TikTok videos in hopes of convincing Trump supporters to get vaccinated.

Lance,

I, too, think there is an agenda afoot, but not a hidden agenda.

There is a blatant effort and major longing among the Leftists and Socialists, to have a one party system in this country, so that Dems will effectively become autocrats, and Republicans will essentially be screwed.  Then, we will have open borders permanently, and we will be headed for globalist world order.  We will have no more sovereignty, and Soros' dream will have been accomplished.  We will no longer be what our Founders intended  us to be, but will be similar to Europe, although worse.... and religiousness within our borders will be phfftt, a fading memory of a wiser time.

Our Heavenly Father will be extremely ashamed and disappointed in us all.

This, then, will be the swan song of Pelosi, her retirement exit, with 'Her Majesty's' projection of a wide, glistening grin across her smug, Progressive face.   (not unlike The Joker!)

You might want some Triscuits too.  And some apple juice to 'wash it all down'!  Cans of Del Monte spinach will add some necessary greens needed in the digestive tract, also!  GOTTA  HAVE SOME GREENS!

Plead your prayers fervently and with sincere humility to quell the foolish selfishness of late!

We still have a chance, I'm hoping.

Maybe.

All.

My daughter Madison who is a nurse at U.T.Southwestern tells me that their Covid-19 ward is full to the brim again because of the delta variant.  They have one patient that was previously vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine and the over 100 others are all new Covid-19 cases of people who contracted it by being unvaccinated for varius medical, religious or political reasons.

My other daughter has cried every day this week at work.  She is the criminal defense attorney.  She has been asked to represent numerous clients in court or on plea deals who speak other languages without a translator.  She handles DUI's and other cases in about 15 counties in Northeast Texas.  Her problem is that the firm took these people's money to represent them and they cannot even understand their attorney or the charges and plea deals offerred to them.  The firm is like a puppy mill for criminal defense and will take anyone's money which is large upfront fees for representation in court where they cannot even communicate with them.

Her extracurricular activities are going well as I think she is taking out her frustrations on her competitors.  She just won the U.S. Open in 130 lb and under weight class for the Wrold Jiu Jitsu league.  She is now 6 - 0 in competitions.  Both her opponents submitted to her when they relized  their arm was about to be broken after their initial cartilege cracks.   She was ahead of both of them on points when the submission occurred.

Sandra:

First, I must confess that after all this time, I do not know how to paste images into my messages.  Too embarrassed to ask and, given my technical background, I should be able to figure it out.  But I am hitting 0 for many in this area.   By the way, thanks for posting the cartoon.

Second, your comment that the cartoon “speaks volumes” really does so, but not in the way you seemed to mean.  I believe it speaks volumes regarding the tendency of individuals with a liberal orientation to continue to hang on to the legends of the time which were established in the press, no matter that it was twenty years ago.  Continue to beat a dead horse.

Was it right for the US to invade Afghanistan?  It certainly seemed to be the consensus at the time.  Now we talk of “bi-partisan” efforts if one or two Republicans join the Democrat side.  Then the country and the politicians were nearly united that the right thing to do was to find Al Qaeda and destroy them.  Frankly, the mission was accomplished, regardless of the mocking of the press that the US had not finished the job.  This mission was not the same as nation building, but was often treated as the same in the press.

Was the US wrong to decide to stay and try to eliminate the Taliban and at the same time to try to build a more western styled government?  At the time it was considered a noble effort.  And time would show it was not going to work, ever.  However, a lot of other folks had their chance to right the policy.  Obama/Biden did not in eight years.  Trump did not either, although he made meaningful steps to pull out.  Biden has now pulled out and I think most Americans would agree with the end goal.  However, his execution was so precipitous and endangering to the lives of Americans and allies on the ground that he is rightly under attack from both the left and right.

In the words of our current Vice-President, “They’re not going to pin that s___ on me!” regarding Biden’s (and her) decisions.  In a similar manner, I don’t believe it is fair to try to pin the current situation on Bush based on twenty years of ongoing politics in the interim.

On the other hand, Sandra, I find myself once more being overly serious for this forum.  Certainly President Bush kept his sense of humor and I should at least be as friendly as he was.  My apologies for coming over the top.

Sandra et al,

I voted for & supported Bush Jr. (and Sr.) but every year that passes, I have less and less respect for him as our President. Like so many Republicans, including the infamous 19 recently, they have 1 foot based on time-tested conservatism and the other in the morass of Marxism/"progressivism". I really DON'T CARE how nice a person is (Trump, Bushes, Obama, Biden, HilLIARy) as long as they can do the job and Trump is the ONLY one since Reagan who could in my opinion. Romney is the epitome to me of the polished, highly educated, accomplished WORTHLESS person that infests a lot of the Republican Party, and the Dems of course (except they don't come off polished, educated, smart, etc. usually). Ever hear Susan Collins (R) of Maine speak? I think her slow speech indicates her slow thinking as well. Forget covid, Liz Cheney now has Trump Derangement Syndrome?!?! More Bizarro times. WE SO NEED TERM LIMITS!

Recently on FNC (where else?) I saw a video of one of our troops trying to lead the Afghani "soldiers" in just simple calisthenics. What a bunch of ZEROS!!! Even our Woke youth would be preferable to those morons. And now we're hearing (on FNC) the horror stories of when they tried to have Afghani refugees settle in Eastern European countries in the past - most of those imported males ended up in jail - a failed effort due to the sadly & grossly deficient nature of the immigrants.

I saw a general yesterday or before saying how he knew in 2005 when he was there that there was NO hope that the Afghani army would be any help in the future. We need to get rid of Milley and the others in the military who are part of this cancerous WOKE crowd plus all the brown-nosing, self-serving placeholders at the high levels of the Pentagon (we've had enough of those or worse as Commander in Chief), i.e., swamp dwellers. Also we need to clean house in all the other infested overpopulated Executive Department bureaucracies. Is it too late for all that?

And of course, it's high time Congress did SOMETHIING TO HELP THE COUNTRY FOR ONCE and start impeachment proceedings. What is that chance? Plus, do we really want that? We might get Kamala or maybe Pelosi? YIKES!!!! Obama was right - elections (even rigged ones) DO HAVE CONSEQUENCES!

Just got my ticket for tonight's basketball arena show, Guns N Roses. I bet I fit in with the other concert goers - NOT!!!!!!!! I'm a real sucker for a guitarist like Slash - I got his autograph at another venue here.

Concerning how I fit in with the music crowd in greater Portland, once I was in downtown Portland at a venue called Dante's Inferno - with that name, you can imagine some of the acts that come through there. Actually I highly recommend Hell's Belles, an all-female AC/DC tribute band I saw there. They have an AWESOME (& beautiful blonde) guitarist, Adrian Conner, who CAN SHRED!! Plus they're a tribute band, right? And her antics & behavior on stage mimic or even outdo those of her model, the obviously-in-need-of-Ritalin Angus Young!! REALLY entertaining to watch her, especially as she twirls her blonde dreadlocks wildly as she's playing! They're not from Portland and I also saw them in Anchorage, AK.

Anyway at Dante's at a show, I was waiting to get a fruit juice at the bar and this young, very short, tattooed, multi-nose-and-ear-ringed, wild party outfit, day-glo hair, etc. woman (obviously WITH IT!) started noticing me with my non-tatted, non-ringed, non-tanned, clean-shaven & bathed with clean fingernails, elderly button-down shirt & jeans with hiking shoes (Joe Straight) appearance and you could see the amusement in her face as she's looking over her (grand?) father in the flesh!!! hahahahaha!!! If she only knew about my past!!!! But I quickly also started noticing her noticing my Joe Straightness, and I'm sure I also had some amusement on my face (I was about to die laughing at her amusement!!!). So pretty soon she noticed I was "on the edge of my seat" as I couldn't wait to see her next judgmental look at me as I certainly had a big smile on my face at this point, so she looked away - HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Concerning ace guitarist Jennifer Batten, with her band Full Steam, they're worth seeing if you're ever here. She has a keyboardist who is very good, and a lead singer who is OUTSTANDING, Pat Yadon. He can really sing the Foreigner, Journey, etc. songs. I first saw Pat Yadon with a local cover band who has another EXCELLENT guitarist, the Jilt Band. People here are SO spoiled with the great music scene, AND with ALL the genres.

Because I've never been able to keep my mouth shut.

The war in Afghanistan cost this family years of our lives, and we're the lucky ones.

It was tearful goodbyes in crowded hangars, walking to the car so we wouldn't lose it in front of everyone, holding on just a few extra seconds in case this was our last kiss, our last hug.

It was watching my children say goodbye to their father a third and fourth time (and eventually a 5th), tears streaming down tiny cheeks that had already seen too much after Jason's deployments to Iraq.

It was holding my new daughter for months before my husband ever got to meet her.

It was being alone, stationed thousands of miles away from family during a deployment when a neurosurgeon told me he suspected my child had a brain tumor.

It was nights where I couldn't pretend it was okay that I slept with a laptop open on his pillow just in case he'd get the chance to skype.

It was not washing that pillow case until the night before he came home for midtour or good, just because I was terrified I'd lose the last thing that had his scent.

It was giving that same pillowcase to our toddler (Ironman) because the scent of his dad was the only thing that would stop the night terrors. (And eventually having to wash it, and hope enough of the scent remained)

It was years of my stomach dropping at the sound of the doorbell.

Years of googling to see if there had been a helicopter crash when Jason didn't call after a flight.

Phone calls saying he'd taken a bullet to his fuel tank, but landed safely, which triggered my own anxiety after he'd been seriously wounded in his first deployment.

It cost our kids years without their father. Years where he wasn't in the stand at hockey games. Years where they sacrificed because there was only one parent who couldn't be everywhere at once. Years where they didn't know if their dad would come home because he already bore scars from the deployment where he almost didn't make it out alive.

It cost us friends. Friends that Jason watched wheeled onto planes in their caskets. Friends I sat at memorials for days later—memorials attended by 80% spouses, who were both grieving and praying our guys wouldn't be next.

And those are just our moments as family, they don't even touch on what Jason went through.

YEARS of sacrifice that we signed up for, right?

So for people to be posting that we "never should have been there..." Let me tell you this:

There are moments I may agree with you. Moments where I want my years back. The past few days have made me scream and sob that it was all in vain. Days where I have watched my husband deal with complicated emotions and shut off his social media because of the shitty things people say from behind the safety of a keyboard.

No veteran needs you posting that we shouldn't have been there, that the wounds, the PTSD, the funerals, the sacrifice, the loss didn't mean anything. Trust me, there's already an awareness in military households that you can't comprehend unless you've lived in one. And every single veteran (and their families because we may not serve, but we sure as hell clean the infection out of wounds left by shrapnel) has differing opinions.

But here's the thing: I don't want my years back.

I will never know if those twenty years we spent in Afghanistan suppressed another attack on the US. I will never know if my children are safer because of their dad's sacrifice.

I do know that because of those twenty years, little girls in Afghanistan were taught to read. They were allowed to go to school—a first for many. Does it eviscerate me that those same little girls may now be hunted down by the Taliban? Of course, but Jason's sacrifice wasn't in vain. Those girls can read. They will know that there is a bigger world waiting for them if they can get out. They have had twenty years because our troops gave it to them.

Should we do all that we can to grant emergency visas and take refugees? Absolutely. Is this whole situation a heartbreaking catastrophe? You bet. Should we be doing everything possible to get our interpreters and other at-risk Afghan people out? YES.

Do you have the right to say whatever you want about it? Hell yes. My husband, brother, father, mother, cousins, and grandfathers fought for you to have the right to say whatever you please. The first amendment isn't just a line on a piece of paper, it's a constant, never-ending purchase that's paid for with the blood of the US Military.

One day we'll have to dissect what happened, not just over the last few weeks, but the last twenty years. I'm just not sure military families like ours are ready for civilians with zero skin in this game to play armchair general like they had the slightest clue what the hell actually happened over there. Even I only know what my husband has told me from what he'd seen while serving in Afghanistan. (Also, I'm absolutely a civilian, I just didn't know how to fit that in that sentence...)

So say what you want, but remember who's reading it. We have lost more soldiers to suicide than combat since these wars began (NPR). Don't be the reason that rate rises. Don't make someone's sacrifice seem trivial or worthless. There are so many people hurting today, please don't be the person to stick the knife a little deeper.

And if you're a veteran struggling, please reach out.

The military crisis line is at 1-800-273-8255 or you can text for help at 838255.

As for me, I'm going to go hug my vet and pray for the safety of both the soldiers on the ground and the civilians fleeing tyranny. You do you.

Good post.  We do need to appreciate and support our veterans.  Steve Healy spent time in Afghanistan and we are better off for him being a veteran.

Lowell, et al. -- I know this is posted on the crazy people forum, but I just don't want to take any more abuse from the Tommyrot crowd:

When you wrote about Medicare advantage plans, everyone was negative about dental coverage. I have a Humana PPO that costs $10 a month and includes dental and vision.  I just had two crowns last week -- like others I like to crunch ice and have elderly teeth -- and my out of pocket was $567.  I took this plan because my dentist and PCP are on it and there are lots of specialists I might see in my area.  Is there something I'm missing or do I just have a good deal?
