Sandra Spieker (Ringo)
I had insomnia last night and couldn't turn my mind off trying to remember things from my childhood. Here are a few I came up with:
1950's Heights Elementary and Richardson:
Bailey's Variety Store in Old Downtown Richardson. They had dolls that I collected - Ginny Dolls to be specific..Anyone else remember this store?
Standing in a huge line waiting to get a polio shot from some nurses stationed at the Heights Elementary Gym. Seemed like the whole town was there. Later we got the vaccine via sugar cubes... I also remember collecting dimes for the March of Dimes in an effort to stop the disease. Vaccinations saved us all, back then.
Crouching down with my head tucked between my knees by the lockers in Heights, "practicing" a disaster drill. We must have all been a sight to behold with hundreds of kids in the hallways doing that. Were they trying to save us in the event of a tornado or worse???
The Audio-Visual Room at Heights where we saw educational films....many fell asleep, except for that special one they showed to the girls and boys separately in sixth grade....For that one we all stayed awake.
Those crazy washing stations by the restrooms that looked like fountains. I remember you stepped on a bar to turn the water on and the huge bowl collected paper towels at times.
Yes, I too remember Vickery Park....that place was wonderful! They had huge shade trees and the hamburgers were delicious! The pool had a concrete divider between the deep diving end and the rest of the swim area. I would sit on it and watch the divers and listen to the Ity Bity Yellow Polka Dot Bikini on the Juke Box and go home exhausted.
The Skating Rink on Greenville Ave, Deubaks (forgive the spelling). Great place! I couldn't skate very well, but loved the thrill. I remember the daughter of the owner, her name was Carolyn, she was my older sister's age, died at the age of 17 or 18 of menigitis, that was 1961 or 62. We were all sadded and shocked by her death.
1960's
I would shop at Northpark with Cathy Burrows, her mother would drop us off for the whole day, it seemed. We loved The Carriage Shop, Tiches, and the Swiss Miss for lunch. They had a music store with hundreds of records and baby grand pianos. Once we went to Woolworth and we each came home with hamsters, my parents made me return mine, my mother would not tolerate a "rat" in the house! A few of my dates took me to the movies there too, good times!
