Message Forum

Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

Forums work when people participate - so don't be bashful! Click the "Post Response" button to add your entry to the forum.

Our website has had me thinking about so many remembrances of RHS.

To start off, I had no one to eat lunch with as a junior and went home from school crying for days....things had been in my corner until I had to move.

FInally several girls in RHGC approached me to eat with them.  To this day I thank you.

I was thinking back today while working on 2013 paperwork how scared I was in the slave sale.  I had heard horror stories.  All I remember is that my group came in behind Cindy Meyer and my guys were so nice and didn't make us work very hard or do weird (!) things.  Does anyone remember who was a slave with me or what guys bought us?

Forest Lane,

I remember that well. We were severely outnumbered....and don't know how many were in those cars....I just know that police station seemed to be what we agreed on!

I do remember one of those guys yelling and saying..."The police station? Ah...Come on"

Seems as though we just stood there until they drove off!

Lance....I also remembered you and I were running just south of the "The Circle" (Belt Line&Coit) From WHAT I don't know but a cop jumped the curb in his CAR to catch us. And every time he hit a bump that squad car would "bottom out" (I think he was a little out-of-shape to catch us speedsters on foot...ha!)

As far as Forest Lane....I remembered You, Ronnie, Jim and I with another friend named Robert H.were stopped for speeding or something. Robert had a bottle of I.W. Harper with him....and the cop told us he would pour it out if we left Forest Lane. (back in the days that's all they did!)

We did leave.....till the next week! LOL!

You're correct David.  The elderly lady at Sun Rexall was Mrs. Kaplan, Sr.  I met Mr. Dave Kaplan years later, when I was working during summers, at Citizen's State Bank.  He was an officer there, along with my Dad, and many others, including Billye Meyer, a super funny lady!  When I met Mr. Kaplan, I wanted to ask him if his Mother spoke anything other than Yiddish, but I decided to hold my tongue, and be respectful.  He was very nice to me, and my other bookkeeping girl friends.  It's just that the gang of kids on our block, would go to Sun, to spend a few quarters, & dimes, to pass the long summertime afternoons, and when we would start to flip through the magazines, that funny lady would come whipping around the corner, in a cloud of Sun Rexall dust, thrusting that huge wooden, push broom( I swear the thing was 3 feet wide, & heavy as bricks) and we would go fleeing out the front doors, while yelling, "She's 'gonna 'sic that crazy Myna bird on us too!", as we jogged down the sidewalk towards home!  She teased us, as much as we teased her!

Memories Of Richardson:

Many of you do not know that my Dad was the Methodist minister from 1947 to 1957. My brother went to school on Greenville (The RHS Ad Building) when it was 1st through 12th and he was in the first class at the new high school (became Richardson Jr High) our high school opened in 61-62 I think. We moved away my 1st grade through 6th and then back to Richardson 7th-12th. Much of the early stuff has been told to me by family and friends from the church. The story is my dad bought the land for the new church on Belt Line (old church was on the corner of Greenville & Belt Line, the old Ice House is still standing) and many of the members were not in favor because they said "no one is going to church way out their".

Things:

My first paying job the Y 7th grade Bobby Fleming & I worked Indian Guide trips

The Studio Club (Sherry Lane)     Lou Ann's (Live: I Shot The Law & The Law Won)

Long Horn Ball Room (Mitch Rider & The Detroit Wheels) & Bob Wills

Kips Big Boy    Bob-O-Links  Sports Distributors (Still in Business)  The Baxter brothers and their cars

Jr High boy girl parties at Forest Lane Bowl slow dancing to the Beach Boys

The cellar across from KLIF  The tunnel at the old water plant at White Rock The Drive-Ins

Coach Jerry Pittman           Coach McMclaron what great men  Du-Becks   Kellers   Del's

Victory Park                The house I was born in 2nd house on the left Grace Dr

The many adventures of sneaking out and roaming Northwood Hills with Scotty Baxter Elby Martin Bruce Mundy and many others

Happy New Year & To all A Good Night

I had insomnia last night and couldn't turn my mind off trying to remember things from my childhood.  Here are a few I came up with:

1950's Heights Elementary and Richardson:

Bailey's Variety Store in Old Downtown Richardson.  They had dolls that I collected - Ginny Dolls to be specific..Anyone else remember this store?

Standing in a huge line waiting to get a polio shot from some nurses stationed at the Heights Elementary Gym.  Seemed like the whole town was there.  Later we got the vaccine via sugar cubes... I also remember collecting dimes for the March of Dimes in an effort to stop the disease.  Vaccinations saved us all, back then.

Crouching down with my head tucked between my knees by the lockers in Heights, "practicing" a disaster drill.  We must have all been a sight to behold with hundreds of kids in the hallways doing that.  Were they trying to save us in the event of a tornado or worse???

The Audio-Visual Room at Heights where we saw educational films....many fell asleep, except for that special one they showed to the girls and boys separately in sixth grade....For that one we all stayed awake.

Those crazy washing stations by the restrooms that looked like fountains.  I remember you stepped on a bar to turn the water on and the huge bowl collected paper towels at times.

Yes, I too remember Vickery Park....that place was wonderful!  They had huge shade trees and the hamburgers were delicious!  The pool had a concrete divider between the deep diving end and the rest of the swim area.  I would sit on it and watch the divers and listen to the Ity Bity Yellow Polka Dot Bikini on the Juke Box and go home exhausted.

The Skating Rink on Greenville Ave, Deubaks (forgive the spelling).  Great place!  I couldn't skate very well, but loved the thrill.  I remember the daughter of the owner, her name was Carolyn, she was my older sister's age, died at the age of 17 or 18 of menigitis, that was 1961 or 62.  We were all sadded and shocked by her death.

1960's

I would shop at Northpark with Cathy Burrows, her mother would drop us off for the whole day, it seemed.  We loved The Carriage Shop, Tiches, and the Swiss Miss for lunch.  They had a music store with hundreds of records and baby grand pianos.  Once we went to Woolworth and we each came home with hamsters, my parents made me return mine, my mother would not tolerate a "rat" in the house!  A few of my dates took me to the movies there too, good times!

Bubba Bostick was the best skater at Dueback's.  Carolyn Duback competed in Miss Texas using Skating as her talent.  Elbe Martin's Corvette tires had a 50 mile warranty.  Buenos Dias Senora Bynum...TV Spanish.  Duck Creek Golf course was first time driving golf cart and they had a 618 yard par 5 with cracks in the turf about 4 inches wide.  How about cinamon sticks (tooth picks) at Barnums (??) drug store on Greenville.   I think David Cunningham worked there.  They really burned your lips, but worth a 5 mile bike ride. As I remember, no air conditioning at Heights...or am I wrong.   Winter of 64 or 63 or 62 was the twist contest in 20 degree weather at the end of the middle wing of Heights.   In addition to Karlans' remembrance of our class girls on Westwood, don't forget Cindy Spicer and Marty Matson...and just down the road, SusanNewsom and Melinda Nelson Devon Beardon...And, my 6th grade year, we were sort of a misfit class with Mr Simms as our teacher.  After lunch, he would disappear and go over to "entertain" the accelerated kids in Ms. Craft's class.  This left us to our own for 10-15 minutes.  How we did not blow that place up is beyond me...Late

Hello, All.

We are going to make a change in the website, emphasizing the User Forums because they offer some advantages over the Message Forum, including search capability. Sandra is going to try to migrate the current set of messages, but it won't be perfect. We will post messages to both Forums when we are in reasonable shape, so hold that thought!

I have created a new Topic under the User Forums called, Open Discussions.  If you would like to post some musings about the past, present or whatever comes to mind, regarding our Class and RHS, please either reply to that topic or post a new topic under that one.  Sound confusing?  It really works similar to the Message Forum, but organizes our topics a bit better.  Login, and click on the link above, called User Forums and try it.  It is really simple, I guarantee it.  If not, send me a message and I will do my best to ease you through your pain.

I looked into copying some of the messages from this forum to the User Forum.  As an Administrator, I can copy those messages, however, it will appear as if I am the original poster.  I checked into the Class Creator site to make sure there was no other option to copy a post, and it looks as if that is the only way to do that.  I don't want every message on the new Forum to appear as if I posted them...so I have not copied any of them.  There is an alternative however....keep reading....

If you have a topic that you posted on the Message Forum, that you would like to appear on the User Forum, you can copy your own topic over youself, and it will appear in your own name (as it should).  Just login and find your post on the Message Forum.  You should see an Edit button at the top of that post.  Click Edit and use your mouse to highlight all of your text.  Then press the Ctrl button and the C key on your keyboard to copy the text to your computer's clip board.  Then go to the User Forum, find the topic, or create one and paste the text using the following keystrokes, Ctrl plus the V button.   Confused?....just message me, I am willing to help anyone that determined to move their topic over, everyone except Lance...heh, heh!  You already have my number Lance...just kidding.

Sorry Karlan!   Didn't mean to post this more than once.  I posted this using my phone on the train this morning (5:40 am) and it didn't show that it was submitted. As you can tell, I am a big Sooner fan even though Karen and graduated from UNT.  It is a family thing, as my Great Grandfather was President of OU and Missouri and my grandparent and my Mother's four siblings all graduated from OU as well as my brother, Stuart and numerous cousins.

Go UNT!

Lowell:  It was Simpson Barnett.  The pharmacy on Greenville where they sold the cinnamon oil for your toothpicks.

The Circle:

A short story about the circle or roundabout at Coit and Belt Line.  Karen and I were coming up on the circle one night and the police were there with their lights on and we noticed a car sitting in the middle of the circle.  There were beer cans all over the ground the police had some guys who apparently were weren't familiar with the circle and had gone straight jumping into the center of the roundabout.  Needless to say they were in big trouble.

This was all when Belt Line and Coit were two lane roads.

Scattershooting* while wondering if  anybody remembers. the Peanut Gallery,

Scattershooting a term probably copywrited by Blackie Sherrod.

Lance, do you remember the Halloween Adventures driving the pickup and throwing eggs.  As I recall, you were the Chief Egg Acquisition Officer because you got a special discount..

Why weren't we all arrested for Criminal Mischief, Vandalism and Hooliganism?  I think some us like Tommy and I could have been arrested for stalking.  We were stalking before stalking was UnCool.

When I figured out Forest Lane finally, some of us weren't satisfied with just the action there.  We figured out there was a "Forest Lane" at Kingsley and Audelia, on South Buckner, at Lancaster and Kiest  and West Belt Line.  In a night we would circuit the whole town, gas was cheap.  Before long some of us had girlfriends all over town.  I remember Royce Herndon and I cruising by a bunch of motorcycle riders at the Ashburn Ice Cream store at Lancaster or Hampton and Kiest.  They didn't like us talking to "their girls".   We were in Royce's mother's Chrysler.

One of the guys yelled "Driving your Mom's car?"  I think our retort was somehting like "At least our parents own cars."  They chased us down Kiest toward Westmoreland. I tried to get Royce to force a guy coming up on the right into the ditch so they would quit chasing us, but he said they can't do anything to us in this tank. Next thing we know the guy on the left sprayed something in Royce's face.  Our first experience with mace. Good Times!

.

Steve Keene--I seem to remember a story involving you and another Eagle cruising Forest Lane. As I recall, you pulled up beside a car with hot chicks. You asked if they wanted to get acquainted. They responded in the negative, and added that they were on the way to get together with some boys. Your response: "Let us know when you want to get together with some MEN."

Hey, Bruce, I was just gigging you about your enthusiasm!  Great win for OU, for certain.

And, Lowell, I worked at Simpson-Barnett for two years, my senior year at RHS and the first year I was up at NTSU.  One of the pharmacists, George Tidmore, was a good friend of my parents from church and was instrumental in arranging support for my mom and me while my dad was near-death in a como at the brand-new Presbyterian Hospital on Walnut Lane, all of which happened in the spring of 1969.

And, now that you mention it, does anyone remember how Arapaho road virtually ended at Coit and began to meander westward?  That was long before the road was straightened into its current configuration.

Yeah David, I do recall that.  Pretty sure I was with John Kuhn from the Class of 1970.  What a "chick magnet" he was.   I was lucky to get to ride along.  His mother, Mary was a sweetheart.

Earlier I said that Tommy and I were probably guilty of Stalking.  Maybe that was too strong a word.  What do you call driving five miles out of the way to drive by a girl's house on the way to or coming back from almost anywhere you went, in hopes of catching a fleeting glimpse of the angel that was the object of your high school crush and constant dreams?    ..........Oh, Stalking. ..... I was afraid of that.  Fortunately, the statute of limitations has probably run out on that.  Is that right David Seidler?  Congrats on just being named one of the Top Lawyers in Texas according to Texas Monthly.  And has anyone seen the new Tostitos commercial playing in the bowl games and on the Discovery Channel?  Pretty sure that's Royce Herndon dancing with the shaved head in the 1970's disco outfit in the middle of the Tostitos Party.

And by the way we were also guilty of Impersonating a Police Officer.  Who remembers tricking out the 1967 white Ford Galaxy with flashing red lights under the hood?  The idea was if we were papering a house and we knew the parents caught us,  we would roll up with the flashing lights as a disincentive for the parents to call the police, because they thought they were already there stopping the perpetrators.  That car was also fun to hit the high traffic makeout hotspots and to pull in behind a couple and turning on the flashing lights. That was usually good for a hilarious mad scramble.  Weren't you part of that plan Hugh Rogers?

Lance,

The article makes good and reasonable sense.

As far as your 5 questions to me, I would give them all a NO.  However, you did not expound on circumstances surrounding any of them.  Oh, well, how about we change the subject.....before I get too far into my analyzing mode.

k....since recent posts about volunteering, our over/underzealous happy memories communication channel has sort of shut down.  I don't know what I can volunteer for, but I will do my best to keep this linkup going...Apparently, David says homecoming.  There is a parade.  It goes down Beltline near my sister's house and Susan Newsom's is next door vacant.   The gathering time would have to be 3-4...CHILDREN are involved in this, but it would possibly still be fun...I don't know if we could get a "Star Box" next to Ammerman's old house, or at the Creek bridge...but, whatever...don't bring your SS 396 or GTO's

01/15/14 10:59 AM #192

Steve Keene

Hey Lowell:

Yeah, I am not sure what it is, but I suspect some combination of senility, apathy or pervasive classwide amnesia about all those little funny stories that I know we all have.  Lance's comments don't make his butt look big to me because I know who he was, is, and am pretty sure I know where he is going.  I suppose many that do not know me suspect that my rap sheet may be long and I glory in those past transgressions, or as Lance might say "Does my Wanted Poster Reward make me look Smalltime?"

I enjoy remembering all those funny interactions that shaped all of us when we were young, naive and looking for direction.  Like Lance, I know where I've been, am and hope I know where I am going.  I look forward to rekindling the friendships, knowing where my old friends are, and going with many of them in the future.   Hope to see you to reconnect.

P.S.  If the wages of sin is death, I am past my expiration date.

I think our interpretation of Rom: 6 is pretty close.  I did not expand my comment to mention that I am past my expiration date because my Big Brother, Christ intervened on my behalf.

And I do not have a Bible with me at the moment, so let me paraphrase something I seem to recall when Christ admonished the churches in Revelation, I think to Smyrna:  I know your poverty, but you are rich.  I will give you the Crown of Life because you have kept the Faith.
