Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

Forums work when people participate - so don't be bashful! Click the "Post Response" button to add your entry to the forum.

You know, despit everything that has happened in history, the S & P 500 is at it's all time high right now.

Looking back at a chart going back to 1984.   A few blips down...a few blips up...but generally, a gradual rise up all the way to the top.

This is why life insurance companies make so much...

And some of you guys.

Everyone have a Merry Christmas, or  with  some in our class have a Happy Hanukkah! Just celebrate the season as best you can with family (and friends) and pray for peace in our world. It's crazy in Russia and in Israel as well.

Sandra, I wish you luck with your eye issues. I have already had cataract surgery in both eyes. All is good here. Can't drive at night very well, but.... As David says, growing old is not for sissies!!!

Love you guys

Ron

Robert (Bob) Miller

Thought I would get a few "songs" before the New Year.

Orange Hair copy right Bob Miller 2023

To the tune of “Red Headed Stranger” – with apologies to Willy

The orange haired actor from New York, New York

Came into town one day

Riding in back of a shiny black limo

Proclaiming  M-A-G-A

The orange haired actor screamed it was stolen

Flailing his tiny hands

Don’t let the voters use mail-in ballots

And elected electors be damned

Don’t mock him, don’t knock him

He can’t hide his sorrow

He can barely manage the pain

Just tell him you’re sorry and not to worry

Maybe he’ll be leader again

The oily-haired Rudy and lapdog companions

Followed their leader around

They made calls to Georgia and tried Arizona

But rebuffs were on the way

But don’t count him out, order recounts

And maybe he’ll be leader one day.

The riots are over. The Proud Boys yet flourish

The Oath Keepers want to bail

The evidence gathered, the charges are filed

People are going to jail

Don’t mock him, don’t knock him

He can’t hide his sorrow.

He can barely manage the pain

Just tell him you’re sorry and not to worry

Maybe he’ll be leader again

The orange haired actor is running again

Despite claiming two terms he won

The MAGA are gaga. Q-Anon is rejoicing

Again with the anointed one

But don’t go so fast. It maybe won’t last

The trials are on the way

The lady in Georgia is really determined

Will he be able to fight another day

Don’t mock him, don’t knock him

He can’t hide his sorrow.

He can barely manage the pain

Just tell him you’re sorry and not to worry

Maybe he’ll be leader again

The guy in New York is also insistent

To take this thing all the way

No other group is loudly complaining

But he just wants to have his way

Yet it is fate for the orange haired actor

To have to take all this abuse

And all that can happen

When you don’t know how to lose

Don’t mock him, don’t knock him

He can’t hide his sorrow.

He can barely manage the pain

Just tell him you’re sorry but he might need worry

It’s doubtful he’ll be leader again

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Happy Christmas

Robert (Bob) Miller

And this one. But no official tune yet. Based on "Pancho and Lefty" by Townes Van Zandt.

LEFTY by Bob Miller                                       Copyright 2023

          1

We last left Lefty in Ohio at a dockside bar playing his guitar,

Living in a cheap hotel.  You know, about as low as a cowboy goes.

He sang his ballads every night. On and on the songs would go

About his life and lifelong friend -the one-named bandit Pancho.

Then he up and said he’d go away from the dock and Ohio

He wanted a new change of scene and decided on New Orleans.

REF

Lefty could not hang around to see what he knew was bound to be.

          2

A stern wheeler down the Ohio past the spit of old Cairo

Through Memphis and post bellum south almost to the Mississippi mouth

He set a crate, got out his guitar on the corner near a dockside bar.

Put a dollar in the case for display bowed his head and began to play.

It was almost dark when he looked around, mostly dimes in the case were found.

A dozen quarters or maybe ten, he nodded his thanks to the people then--

The barman was standing by the case an unhappy look upon his face.

You’re killing me playing out here come on in and have a beer?

So Lefty sang his songs , back-room sleeping he took in stride

Mornings saw him sweeping floors unstacking chairs and doing barman chores.

REF

Lefty whispered into Pancho’s ear standing close so none could hear

I can’t hang around to see what I know is bound to be

          3

One night a man came by, offered Lefty a chance to open for his band on tour

Lefty talked it over with Joe, Joe replied that he should go.

Frank the drummer in the band said one day, “Lefty, I have heard you play

Three weeks now to the day, you never sing the same song twice”

Lefty said, “I really only know one song about Pancho a bandit

From the deserts down in Mexico and I’m singing it to pay a price.

We had some trouble with the federales, I left Pancho when he was on his knees

I’ve always thought I done him wrong, I’m looking for redemption in this song.

“And when that song is done you know I’m really going to have to go

To Rosa down in Mexico and tell her that I’m sorry.”

          4

So Lefty goes to Mexico finds Rosa where he left her years ago

Her daughter has Pancho’s eyes, he asks her where Pancho lies,

Rosa takes him to the Church in town. Stopping by a cross he looks down.

“Pancho” written on the patibulum, The stipes, the barrel of a gun.  [pronounced sty pees]

He says goodbye to Rosa then he says he’s sorry once again.

She says goodbye with a smile. He says he may be back in a while.

REF

Lefty saw Pancho laid to rest, he finally got that off his chest,

Now he knows what was to be and what he couldn’t see.

          5

His song is over, but his soul’s not free, decides to go to Los Angeles

Maybe he’ll find comfort there or maybe just a prayer.

From the deserts down in Mexico, to the riverbanks of the Ohio,

To the dockside bars of New Orleans, to the city of Los Angeles.

The rest of the story so far untold.

REF

Pancho loved the bandit life. Lefty could no longer live that life.

Lefty loved old Pancho sure, but he knew the knowing could not endure.

What was to be came to be for bandit Pancho and his friend Lefty.

Today I bought a carpet cleaner and it came with a bottle of OXY Boost.  It says "Add to formula for permanent pet stain removal".  If the stain is permanent then how will the cleaner remove it?

Got a laff out of the statement.

Merry Christmas

Bob Miller.

I read your rough lyrics and sort of had a rythym to them.

They're having a Townes Van Zandt (wake?) in Galveston this New Year's Day...I don't know where or what time...

Just heard it on Pacifica Radio show whilst driving for Chinese this aftenoon...

fm1960 was a traipse

The kerfuffle erupting over what Nikki Haley said is puzzling to me.

If I remember my history lessons fairly well, I was taught that the Civil War was fought to preserve the Union of the United States firstly, and the slavery issue was secondary. Also, the Southern states wanted to be able to govern themselves in ways the Northerners would not have had agreement..

Isn't that what you Richardson students remember as well?

Another puzzling question that gnaws at my brain, is this:  What the heck did the Palestinians and their elected Hamas warriors think would happen in response to their barbarian attack on innocent Israelis, with the beheading of infants and toddlers, the raping of their women, and the burning alive of grandparents in the beds where those elderly had been sleeping?  Didn't they know of the Israelis' superior fighting forces?

I believe they did know, yet they attacked anyway because of their incessant hatred of Jews, century after century.

Now they whine that the response to their evilness is TOO MUCH and unfair......

Please forgive my observances in this peaceful time of the year.

I continue to pray and hope for a better, more sane world, with much more understanding of love and gentle civility among men coming to fruition.

Also, I wish all of you a wonderful New Year as it dawns anew.

Here's a clip of the earlier blues-era Fleetwood Mac. I like the guitar tradeoffs here between the late Danny Kirwan (blonde - born 1950 like some of us) & late Peter Green (black hair & beard):

Lady Lanajuju,

I don't want Haley. Or DeSantis. I want Trump. And Larry Elder as Vice President. Can't you just see it? Trump-Elder, Kinder & Gentler 2024?

And I am REALLY having trouble with forgiving your observances in this peaceful time of the year - NOT! YEE HAW!!

12/30/23 03:26 PM #28749

Janalu,

I remember the seceding was largely over the "States Rights" vs federal rights and the role of the Federal Government.  The attack by Nothern states was to preserve the Union.  Slavery was not ended in Maryland, Missouri, Delaware, Washington DC  and Kentuckey until the 13th Amendment on Dec 6, 1865 and the last tribe was in 1878.

I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, by virtue of the power in me vested as Commander-in-Chief, of the Army and Navy of the United States in time of actual armed rebellion against authority and government of the United States, and as a fit and necessary war measure for suppressing said rebellion, do ... order and designate as the States and parts of States wherein the people thereof respectively, are this day in rebellion, against the United States, the following, towit:

Lincoln then listed the ten states[6] still in rebellion, excluding parts of states under Union control, and continued:

I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States, are, and henceforward shall be free. ... [S]uch persons of suitable condition, will be received into the armed service of the United States. ... And upon this act, sincerely believed to be an act of justice, warranted by the Constitution, upon military necessity, I invoke the considerate judgment of mankind, and the gracious favor of Almighty God.

The WOKE people want to ignore history and make it what they think.  The slavery issue of Nikki Haley is just a distraction by the Dems.

Happy New Year

Janalu Jeanes (Parchman)

Jim,

Looks like you will have your wish, which may be okay for us with better policies and a presence of strength, an asset that has been sorely lacking lately, but the idiotic Trump Derangement Syndrom returning as a daily diatribe droning on and on, plus ignorant Hitler comparisons, turns my stomach, reminding me of childish fisticuffs that give adults major headaches and ulcers.

12/30/23 03:33 PM #28751

Jim Bedwell

Lady Lanajuju (note that my prior post to you today now also has the correct spelling),

Just to see the agonizing that will ensue on the left makes it all worthwhile as we'll witness that circus, God willing! Payback for this Biden (really Obama III, as we all know) Catastrophe is a mother - hopefully.....but now there's institutionalized voter fraud, right????? As always, thanks, Dems.........

12/30/23 03:45 PM #28752

Janalu Jeanes (Parchman)

Jim,

Did you see the article reporting that Raffensperger of Georgia, has been hiding for two years, a report about the Dominion voting machines having been found to be hackable and vulnerable?

Georgia intends to use the machines again in the 2024 presidential election.  Can you say, "Here we go again, folks!  Voting citizens are going to be taking up arms pretty soon, dontcha' think?

I can't believe the dishonesty and lack of concern for democracy in our country these days.

12/30/23 03:59 PM #28753

Jim Bedwell

Lady Lanajuju,

Yes, Biden & the Dems are asleep at the wheel AND getting their way in all of this (what else is new? actually quite an historic and infamous feat indeed!!) and I guess the Republicans are asleep in the back seat(s).

And I keep wondering if Soros or Obama is the Antichrist? Or which is the helper, assistant, I can't remember the term for that Antichrist wannabe/light in the Bible and since I'm psyching up for the game in 3 more hours, I'm too lazy to look up his exact moniker, although I guess different versions might have different designations for that "assistant" to that worldwide Big Guy (not Biden, rather the Antichrist).

12/30/23 04:43 PM #28754

Janalu Jeanes (Parchman)

Beelzebub?  No.  That was Milton's PARADISE LOST, methinks.  Maybe not....

I've heard a theologian say the antichrist will be a Muslim; one who claims to adhere to The Qur'an.

Have you heard that?

But for those forum perusers, who dislike this kind of current events talk, do you remember being in the fourth or fifth grade and getting a brand new improved Duncan Yo-Yo in your Christmas stocking, or one of those giant Tootsie Rolls.... or a new Chinese jumprope, that was simply an elastic band that you could have made yourself, from some elastic found in your Mother's sewing kit?

I remember getting a Kodak camera in the fourth grade, that had flashbulbs to screw into that big silver cone-like attachment, included in the gift box.  The big silver thing snapped onto the top of the camera.  We had to use the flash attachment and little blue bulbs when taking photos at night.  I remember taking photos of my little dog Skipper, and my blue bike, next to my new shoe skates.  I think I took a whole roll of basically the same three items.....in various positions.  My Mom said I wasted my film, and told me I would have to buy the next roll of film with my allowance money....which kinda pissed me off a little......but was a nice little lesson in wastefulness!  HA!

Hey Jim!

Did you hear that Biden is spending taxpayer dollars on Ballroom Dancing lessons, for  transgender youth in Peru, to uplift them up?  Aren't they already lifted, as in "Light in the loafers?'   (Corny & inane humor..,pardon moi....)

Wasn't that thoughtful of JoeJoe?  I can ascertain El Presidente did that unusual deed for a calculated reason.  Do you concur, mi amigo?

I just read that there have been 106 attacks on us and our allies who have ships in the Red Sea, mainly from the Houthis.  What does El Presidente do in response?

Zip.

He's too busy/detached in St. Croix 'on holiday' to take action, or....He can't figure out what to do, as we have come to know as his usual reciprocation.

It was Jimmie Johnson's idea to trade Herschel Walker.   The Cowboys got four players from Minnesote an draft pics...

Minnesota's first round pick in 1990, 1991, and 1992.

Minnesota'a 2nd rou nd pick in 1990, 1991, and 1992.

Minnesota's 6th round pick in 1990.

Minnesota's 3rd round pick in 1992

Dallas also gave up three or four other picks.

Slavery was the reason for the Civil War.   State's Rights?   That's what I remember them teaching us.   You talk about propaganda?   Unreal.

Lowell,

You said. "propaganda", when posting above about the Civil War."

What was the propaganda you speak of?

12/31/23 10:33 PM #28757

David Cordell

I have forgotten some of my history. When South Carolina was the first state to secede, why did they do so? It seems to me that they already had slavery. Slavery was not outlawed at the national level. And there was concern that admitting more states to the Union that were not slave states would eventually lead to some sort of Constitutional amendment that would ban slavery.

There were 15 slave states and 19 free state at the beginning of the Civil War. It takes 3/4 of the states to approve a Constitutional Amendment. If the 15 remained slave states, and if all subsequently admitted states were free states, there would have to be 60 states for 3/4 of them to be free states. That is, a Constitutional amendment doesn't seem to have been a possibility.

So,  it would have to be a national law to outlaw slavery in the slave states.

I think it is overlooked that the states had been independent entities. Recall that the Articles of Confederation made such a loose connection that that version of our country was doomed. Each state had its own economy and its own culture. South Carolina and Massachussetts differed by more than just the slavery issue. They didn't want to be tied in too closely.

Even now, I resent that the northeast -- Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine -- is overly represented in the Senate. Among the six states, they have 12 Senators. Texas has only 2 Senators. This, in spite of the fact that Texas more population that all six of them combined by a long shot. What about the House of Representatives, you say? It's roughly proportional. But the Senate can screw up everything. That ol' bicameral compromise seems to work against us.

We still have state and regional resentments against the national government, especially a national government that is dominated by a different region. Ever heard of the border crisis?

David,

Those are worthy, interesting points about the history in the Civil War era.  Your memory is not half bad, it appears!

I want to wish you and Martha many more wonderful years togther, as you two celebrate your 50th anniversary.  You two were a cute couple then (in 1973) and you still are today, with only insignificant, tiny changes.

I enjoy hearing about your adventures together on this forum.  I think you two are blessed in so many ways.  It's nice to witness a happy, cheerful couple enjoying life together in spite of a sometimes troubled world.
