Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

Is it just me or does revisionist history irk anybody else?!?!?

Just like I read that Thomas Jefferson DIDN'T really say "Government is at best a necessary evil; at worst, an intolerable one". And no, Columbus wasn't the first New World honkie. On and on. And you have to fact-check the fact-checkers!

Now I read/hear that Irish writer George Bernard Shaw DIDN'T really say that about "ghoti"?

Ghoti - Wikipedia - anyway whoever said it, said the word "fish" should be spelled "ghoti" as in (from the Wikipedia article):

Now Shaw did complain about nonsensical, irregular spelling in the English language. I know that's true. He was a propopent of sensible spelling revision of same.

In conclusion, I think Wayne's "elivator" is PERFECT for that word in such a new spelling in the dictionary, right? Or maybe "elivatur"? Dunno. I call for a vote - "12 Angry Men" 1956 - still one of my favorite flicks and the only movie Henry Fonda ever produced. The late Sidney Lumet directed and when Hank saw the finished product, he had a big smile on his handsome face since he knew it was superb.

Does anyone remember Mimi Morrie from Heights?

She was in Mrs. Smithwick's 2nd grade class with Virginia Hooter, Barbara Campbell, me and many other darling sweethearts.

I heard my mother say, one time, that she ran off with an older man. (Sounds gossipy, doesn't it?)

Don't know, for sure, what happened there, but was wondering.....

Mrs. Smithwick used to read UNCLE REMUS stories to us, using the certain, necessary, vocal accoutrements of the stories, as she enjoyed doing.   She really got into it all, with the perfect voice inflections that made it sound like Uncle Remus was talking to us right there in our classroom.  It was all very entertaining, I thought, and funny.

I think those books are now considered "racist" and are no longer recommended in elementary classrooms.

That's a darn shame!  Those stories were cool!

The language used in those books was of a certain dialect common in earlier days in the South among Black folks, and was never meant to be racist in any way.  (My opinion.)

Many adults are WAY TOO obsessed with racism in this country.  They think they detect racism where none exists.  We should tell them to give it a rest, PLEASE!

Colorado rallied to beat Colorado State. Yea, Deion!

Horns took awhile to put Wyoming away.

Mimi Morrie -- I remember her. It seems like she had slightly different skin coloring than most girls.

ESG ratings are totally subjective, especially the S. This is from the Morningstar service.

Lowell Tuttle

So I went looking for Mimi Morrie in class photos.   first I discovered Margaret Matheny is listed twice in 4th grade photos.   She was not in Lomax' class.   That's not her on the top row.   That student looks familiar to me but not Margaret.

I thought Mimi was in my/our Lomax class, but not.   I did find her.   Of all places, sitting next to me in Mrs. Haliburton's class photo.   She was attractive.   I remember her and Margaret being friends.

5th Grade there was a rage of Jack's playing...We all played on the classroom floor.   That's some of the stuff I remember about the 5th grade.   That, and our team name on the playground baseball field was Haliburton's Halibuts.

Does anyone remember if we played softball or baseball in those inter class games my team never seemed to win.

I do remember David Williams...Charlie Williams brother.   He came up to the plate and everyone backed up miles in the outfield.   He could clobber the ball.

Lowell or Janalu, or someone,

Two photos of Mimi Morrie? First photo: back row of desks on the far left.

How about the class photo below? Front row, second from right. Both photos are Miss Bell's class.

Here are the kids in the class photo below, at least based on my memory. Assuming that I am fairly accurate,  you can identify most of the kids in the Spanish TV photo.

Back Row: Randy Combs, Cynthia Day?, Doug Shea, Debbie Michaels, Bill Carpenter, Duane Anspon, unknown, unknown
Middle row: Miss Bell, Devon Bearden, Jim Lintner, Alan Joyce, David Thompson, Linda Foster, Marshall Netherland, Steve Sturman, Marsha Hensel
Front Row: Cindy Rose, Dian Zimmerman, Glenda Shaw, Barry Bennett, Dickie Birchler, Sandra Spieker, Stephen Haynes?, Mimi Morrie, Mike Major.

Mike Major and Linda Foster have passed away. Not sure if any others have.

Jim:

How about these:

February may now be pronounced "FEB-U-ARY"

Pianist may now be pronounced with the second syllable having the emphasis - "Pi-AN-ist"

Flautist was taught to us as the correct pronounciation - now, in the US, it is "Flutist" and in Great Britain, the one we were taught is the correct way.

In the past 10-15 years, I paid very close attention to the weather, tempertures, etc. In one of those years, there was a lot of talk about that one winter day in Dallas in which the record low temperature that week was exactly ZERO, which was a record. However, now, when that day rolls around, it was changed to -1.

I don't remember much from the book 1984, but, as I remember it, revisionists changed history to reflect that which was more closely aligned with their ways of thinking. Naturally, since I want to remember any recent examples of it, my age is keeping me from any of the facts that iare now quite different, historically speaking, than when they first happened.

(Please excuse grammar, etc.- my injury last month is still scrampling my brain. Then, put that in a bowl with being old, well, you know...)

Jim,

You stepped into my absolute pet peeve:  the stupic idea that English spelling is a defective phonetic alphabet.  Shaw (who shares my birthday and I have a certain affection for) was a talented playwright and user of the language, but an absolute moron about a number of things, like so many people with huge talent in one area who think it makes them know everything (think Barbra Streisand or Noam Chomsky):  he was sort of a typical crank:   a militant vegetarian, a utopian socialist, and an advocate of simplified English spelling.

I absolutely love the way our othographic system is so wonderfully informative, and  so much, much more sophisticated than simple phonetic transcription.  Our system allows sophisticated written language way, way beyond mere simple representation of how a word sounds:  for one thing we can have a number of different words with the same sound that are clearly diferentiated in writing, for example, to, too, and two.  In speech, we can generally determine which word we are hearing by context, but in writing the differences allow a precision that phonetic spelling would destroy.

Our orthograhy also shows us word roots and how words fit together.  An decently educated person can easily recognize the Latin, Old English, Norman French, and other roots of our words.  That antiintellectual bullshit about "gh" being confusing is silly -- it just shows that a word is of Germanic origin, etc.  One of the most amazing things about English is how easily it picks up and incorporates words from orther languages and how our spelling shows us where words came from.

Bob D.

Our language is indeed complicated. It is interesting that some nouns with the same spelling can have entirely different meanings.

Trough

  • a long, narrow open container for animals to eat or drink out of. Example: After the long journey, the horse drank eagerly from the trough.
  • In meteorology, an elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure Example: The trough is moving in from the northwest and will likely bring showers.

Plane

  • a vehicle that flies through the air. Example: The plane banked to the left to approach the runway.
  • a tool used to make wood smooth and flat: Example: Bob used a plane to remove the undulations in the old table top.

Trump

  • a former President of the United States. Example: Donald Trump was real estate developer before running for President.
  • in the game of contract bridge, a card in the suit than won the bidding process. Example: Mary bid four hearts and since the other three players subsequently passed, hearts became trump.

Biden

  • The current President of the United States. Example: Joe Biden was a Congressman, Senator, and Vice President before being elected President.
  • Any action that suggests that person is  senile or just plain stupid. Example: His most recent biden was filling his car's gas tank with electrical wire.

Bob D,

I agree with you about George Bernard Shaw; if he were alive today, he'd be Woke, I think.

Also, yes, I agree with your position in your post that there are advantages to retaining the legacy spellings. But it's been, what 100-150+ (-200+?) years since spelling became mostly standardized, so that's fairly recent, right? I think I remember that from RHS English classes. So until the 19th century, spelling was an adventure generally, correct? And then illiteracy was still pretty common in the 19th century so I can see why Shaw didn't care about the considerations you mention; rather he was likely focused on (obsessed with?) just having it done the way he thought it should be done, I guess, perhaps a precursor to his kindred-spirit Wokesters?

My 2 pet peeves: 1) gum on the ground, 2) I'm stopped at an intersection waiting to turn & as I'm looking left, the approaching driver takes a right without signaling.

These creations have complete heterochromia - 2 totally different eye colors.

I and many others have central heterochromia (so that falls under hazel) - 2 (or more as in my case - blue and green) colors in the outer part and a different color around the pupil (in my case kinda gold or amber). My 2nd ex had that as well with an olive outer color and a rust color around the center.

David W,

Yes, that' how I pronounce "February", i.e., "Febuary". But like I used to say to my 2nd ex just to irritate her sometimes, "It Don't Matter".

I don't remember much about the year 1984, but oh, never mind.............

Sorry you're having brain issues. Both my parents had strokes at different times. Believe it or not, I haven't had one - yet!

It's not just the degenerative brain disease that is subject to ridicule.  The disease is the LEAST of the ridicule projection.  The shell companies, LLCs, the promoting of an unregistered agent son around the world, and the continuous cover-up lies, are a definite giveaway of the Peter Principle having risen to the surface for observation, with our adversaries noticing it as well.

Unbelievable, very dangerous weakness at our helm.

Lady Lanajuju,

What evidence?

09/19/23 03:15 PM #28193

Janalu Jeanes (Parchman)

Jim,

There is a plethera of evidence if you look on the most trustworthy websites and avoid the so-called legacy press, which is Democrat propaganda, most assuredly.

You are spoofing me now, aren't you?

You heard the Tony Bobulinski interview, didn't you?  Tony asked James Biden how they were able to get away with the deals his family(Biden family) was making, and he answered, "Plausible deniability," with a smirk on his face.

Bobulinski also said he spoke with the FBI for hours about what he experienced when working and talking with the Bidens, yet the FBI never released any of the info to the public, given them by Tony.  The FBI never called Bobulinski back either, even though TB told them he was available for more info if they desired it. .

Obviously the FBI has been ordered to stay mum, just as they decided to do after they had acquired Hunter's laptop in 2019.  The amount of info they have on the Bidens would fill a sizeable book, but they are under the thumb of Merrick Garland and the DOJ. (Reference Miranda Devine's best-selling book.)  Garland and the DOJ are corrupt as Hades, at the moment.  Most know this, but hide the truth, since they have decided that doing anything that might enable Trump would be akin to helping Hitler's spawn, and would destroy democracy in this country; a flat-out lie (the desire to destroy democracy here) told by Pelosi on January 6th, as she spoke with reporters late that day.  Plausible deniability is working quite well for the Biden crime family.

These facts are on tape (YouTube) for historians to use as they write in future publications of the Biden admin.

David Cordell

Tommy, I'm not sure if you were kidding. If not .......

If Biden truly has a degenerative brain disease, he should pull out of the race. And if that happens, I will apologize profusely. Otherwise, he is fair game.

09/19/23 04:30 PM #28195

Jim Bedwell

Lady Lanajuju,

Yes, I'm spoofing you. I just hope (and think) that, if the voter fraud can be controlled somehow this time, the Dems are going down in flames. I bet most Dem voters have never heard of Bobulinsky, or Bo Belinsky for that matter since he's also part of history (along with Mamie Van Doren (she's still alive) - yes).
