Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

‘Jaws’ star Richard Dreyfuss blasts Hollywood inclusion standards: ‘They make me vomit’

Story by Gabriel Hays

Legendary actor Richard Dreyfuss condemned Hollywood’s new inclusivity standards in strong terms during a recent interview, claiming they make him "vomit."

Dreyfuss, who’s starred in "Jaws," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," and many other classic Hollywood films, blistered the new diversity and inclusion guidelines that will be implemented at the Academy Awards starting next year.

The guidelines must be adhered to by any film in the running for a "Best Picture" Oscar.

As first noted on Hollywood in Toto, PBS anchor Margaret Hoover brought up the new guidelines during her interview with the actor on PBS’ "Firing Line" Friday.

The anchor stated, "Starting in 2024, films will be required to meet new inclusion standards to be eligible for the Academy Awards for ‘Best Picture.’ They’ll have to have a certain percentage of actors or crew from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups."

She asked, "What do you think of these new inclusion standards for films?"

Not holding back, Dreyfuss declared, "They make me vomit."

Defending his total rejection of the concept, he said, "Because this is an art form, it’s also a form of commerce and it makes money, but it’s an art. And no one should be telling me, as an artist, that I have to give in to the latest most current idea of what morality is."

The actor continued, claiming that such guidelines stifle creativity and risk. "And what are we risking? Are we really risking hurting people’s feelings? You can’t legislate that? And you have to let life be life."

Dreyfuss further claimed he doesn’t believe any group in society today that should be given special treatment. He said, "And I’m sorry, I don’t think there’s a minority or a majority in the country that has to be catered to like that."

The actor then defended Hollywood legend Lawrence Olivier’s "Blackface" rendition of Shakespeare’s "Othello" in 1968.

He stated, "Lawrence Olivier was the last White actor to play ‘Othello,’ and he did it in 1965. And he did it in ‘Blackface.’ And he played a Black man brilliantly."

He conveyed his point with a few rhetorical questions, asking , "Am I being told that I will never have a chance to play a Black man? Is someone else being told that if they’re not Jewish, they shouldn’t play the ‘Merchant of Venice?’ Are we crazy? Do we not know that art is art?"

Dreyfuss wasn’t done condemning the inclusion guidelines, saying, "This is so patronizing. It’s so thoughtless and treating people like children."

Hoover asked the actor if the history of slavery and racism in America might justify making "Blackface" a taboo, though Dreyfuss claimed he didn’t think so.

Again, he said, "Because it’s patronizing. Because it says we’re so fragile that we can’t have our feelings hurt. We have to anticipate having our feelings hurt, our children’s feelings hurt. We don’t know how to stand up and bop the bully in the face."

Funny commentary in the H Chronicle today making fun of I 45, saying by the time it is scheduled to be finished, 2042, we will have had a trans governor...

Tommy,

You say you have never smoked yet you on several occasions have suggested I smoke it. If you read the entire article you will find out more about the research..  Your reccomendation is like me saying to go and eat some hemlock and report back on the affects.

David,

I remember several years ago there was an uproar that there were too few blacks nominated fo Oscars then there is the various awards for only blacks given out by "black Only " groups.

Tommy,

Aparently you did notread the entire article I linkrd,  Hrer is a second paragraph

It’s not difficult to see how this has become so problematic. As Dr Carsten Hjorthøj, of the University of Copenhagen, which led the study, explained: “Increases in the legalisation of cannabis over the past few decades have made it one of the most frequently used psychoactive substances in the world, while also decreasing the public’s perception of its harm.”.

Why would you suggest I break the law and smoke?

Would you want the airline pilot of your flight high or the mechanic working on safety systems on your car high?

Tommy,

You now said you have never used weed so how do you know what the effects are?  You do not want to believe anything negative about week so all research that gives negative effects cannot be believed by you.  You said that weed is part of God's creation and yet you do not believe there is a God.  Hemlock is part of creation so why dno't you eat some? Rattle snakes are one of God's creachers so why don't you go out and find one and let it bite you?

Wow.  Another mass shooting, this time in Allen, Texas.  Ken Fulk is the mayor there.  I knew him from Rotary Sunshine club in Allen many years ago.  Good man.  I can't imagine his job now.  Getting in front of the national press and probably witnessing the carnage first hand.  When will this madness stop?

Wayne,

I would not suggest you try MJ.  It is not your style and never will be.

My husband was in constant pain for three decades.  He has spinal stenosis, disc degeneration, and arthritis in his back.  He has had a total of three back surgeries.  The first one when he was only 30 years old to repair a ruptured disc in his lower back.  The next one on his neck for the same reason.  The last one after he retired (we waited for a few reasons - cost, loss time off work, and the technology finally was available to offer some hope) which fixed multiple issues with two rods, and six screws in his lower back.  After surgery it took two years for the pain to subside enough so he did not need pain medication of any kind any more.

During that time, he went to pain management.  He was prescribed some stuff that would probably be something you would be totally against.  Time release morphine, hydro-codiene, huge quantities of each laced with Tylenol (madness).  Too much Tylenol messes with the liver and can kill you.  Pain also kills.  I raises your blood pressure, and heart rate.  Too much can cause a heart attack.  All of this only lessend the pain.  It always hovered at a level 5.  The longer you are on pain killers the less affective they are.  The more addicted you get too.  It is the reason they don't work over time.  Pain doctors constantly switch you from one drug to another to try to manage this.

MJ is different.  Before the last surgery and before Danny retired, we went to Colorado on a vacation.  We stayed a week and got some edibles.  For those few brief days it was heaven.  Danny smiled, walked without much pain and we relaxed.  There was no hangover, no craving for more, no shakes coming off of it.   Then we faced reality and returned to Texas, and it was back to the roller coaster of pain meds and waiting for the right time for the major surgery.

Until you have faced long term, incurable chronic pain and your only choice is opioids laced with posionious Tylenol and huge side affects, don't judge those who choose safer, cleaner alternatives.

Wayne, I read an article about the affects of cannabis use now in men 20-30 from bloomberg.   It is interesting to compare the "headlines" and "approach" each article writer used to note the report.   Nothing about Leftists in the bloomberg headlines...https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-05-04/heavy-marijuana-use-increases-schizophrenia-in-men-study-finds#xj4y7vzkg

Where we get our data has the slant of who writes about it.   How we interpret it has the slant of how it goes through our own experiences.  Writers who want to have their musings published manipulate their writings so that their editors will use it.

I value the experiences of the "stuff" I did when I was of a more impressionable age. But,  I am very glad I was a completely paranoid type personality and wanted to be far away from the "culture" as soon as I got on the stuff.

So, if  you do ever experience it, I would do it in a legal area and in a totally natural environment, like a mountain stream in Colorado and  with a guide.  Oh, and it goes without saying, no guns.

I'm depressed about the murder rate, but it hasn't gotten as bad as I thought. Homicide numbers 1975-2021 from the FBI below. Note that these are totals, not rates, and the population has increased.

Data on Wikipedia on vehicluar deaths.   The most amazing stat on this page is the population increase.   Every year for the past 30 years or so, it has be 2 to 3 million per year.   But, in 1999 to 2000 it went up by 10 million.  What happened in 1999 ti 2000???

Wayne,

I pray for those who have been taught to believe that they have been wronged since birth because of past generations.  They miss the blessings that Father God has given each of us.   The opportuniity to be anything in this world regardless of our circumstances.   He is willing to help us get there if we ask him.

Mandated 55 mph speed limits?

It appears that the population anamoly I was questioning may have been the chart's own errors in total population.   The annual increases of about 1% were normal for the 20-30 years leading up to 2000.   The final census population of 2000 had to be adjusted by the auto death chartmakers...

I don't know why they made those errors...

Tommy,

In my humble opinion, it is highly inappropriate to encourage someone to try a psychotropic drug just to see what it is like. That is the come-on of the common pusher. Further, I assume that you know little to nothing about Wayne's health situation, including what medications he may be taking. Try googling "does marijuana have drug interactions".

I don't buy the concept that marijuana is legal in Colorado or other states. Marijuana is a schedule 1 controlled substance under federal law. It is against the law to possess it except in (legitimate) research.

That said, I am sensitive to Sandra's story regarding Danny's pain relief, but legitimate pain relief is not the same as smoking dope just to get high.

You are encouraging Wayne to do something that is clearly against his character. Wayne has gone more than seven decades without marijuana, as have I. Don't you think that is an indication of his nature?

I am somehow reminded of a serpent and an apple.

David,

The Royal coach Inn on NW highway was where we had our Sr Ball.  From what I heard was due to the Richardson Daily News report saying "95 % of RHS students used drugs the school had trouble finding a venue for the balls.

Wayne,

Jesus gave us the example of "you have to get a little dirty and talk with prostitutes and tax collectors if you are going to send them a message of hope and salvation without assessing blame".  I appreciate that Jesus equated prostitutes and tax collectors.  That is a Brother after my own heart.

Having spent thirty years as a Boy Scout adult leader, I have seen firsthand the effect of marijuana smoking on a number of teenagers.  I am pretty sure Wayne has had this experience, too, and no one has any business being supercillious about his failure to want first hand experience with pot.

The heartbreaking scenario that was repeated every few years is that an outstandingly talented young man would start smoking pot and smoke away everything that made him outstanding.  I can think of at least three in particular who finished all of their Eagle requirements, including the merit badges, references, leadership, and Eagle project, but couldn't get it together to finish the final paperwork to get to the board of review. Even with the modern watered-down Eagle requirements, getting to that point took a great deal of work and inititaive, more than most kids could manage.

There is a recognizable pattern: we'd see a boy who suddenly lost all motivation, became lethargic, emotionally withdrawn, and unable to complete simple tasks.  Their attitude as "get 'er done" patrol leaders or senior patrol leaders became "whatever."  They'd go from being honor students to barely passing in school, from being well-groomed and dressed with a bit of pancache to slovenly, and from roll models for the other boys to bad examples.

Their outside the troop friends would change and I'd usually smell that sickly sweet vomit-like smell on their clothes and hair.

Another heartbreak is to see them as adults.  None of them that I know of (and I know most of their parents and many of them have brothers who went through the troop as well as kids in the troop who were their friends). have done anything other than directionless muddling along as grown ups.  They do not number among the young men I'm honored to have known who've grown up to be wonderful fathers, as well as productive members of the community.

We also had some kids we had to run off, who brought pot into the troop.  Those guys started out with the pothead attitude and were never going to advance on their own.  The reason we had to get rid of them was that they got other kids smoking.

In fairness, the pot smoking often was part of other problems the kid had -- like drunken or pill-popping mothers or fathers, divorcing parents, a death in the family, parents losing jobs, or just crazy, abusive parents. Other times it wasn't -- several of them had brothers in the troop who have thrived.  I also have to add that it's not a "one puff means instant death" situation, either.  I know lots of the guys tried pot and didn't get involved enough to change their lives.

Tommy, Steve, Janalu, etc.

I just looked at the forum after a few days. I too now recognize the older Mike McCaul in those later photos but not in Austin in 2015. I had thought it was Dallas's own Mike McKool Sr., a noted pothead.

Tommy,

I posted FASCINATING stuff about likely-dead-for-decades, supremely degenerate East Dallas drug pusher Bongo and also about some of the pot escapades of one Joe King Carrasco, Texas Music Hall of Fame inductee, so you can do a search for those 2 notables here, correct?

Here are the first 6 verses of Psalm 148:

Praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord from the heavens;
praise him in the heights above.
Praise him, all his angels;
praise him, all his heavenly hosts.
Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.
Praise him, you highest heavens
and you waters above the skies.

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for at his command they were created,
and he established them for ever and ever—
he issued a decree that will never pass away.

And here's a fascinating look at part of the universe:

After 32 yrs coaching and teaching at the high school level I have seen to many of the same scenarios.  Good athletes smoking their talents away.  Starters and possible scholarship recipients go to second team or just quiting.  Some losing their college  scholarships not because they got caught but because of lack of performance, not showing up to practice , and/or skipping classes (failing).  I have also  seen some of the same results of those that drank it all away.

And you should detail your drug experiences, including any positives or negatives, as you ask that I do.

Tommy,

You are such a big lier. You just admitted that you use drugs to have an "inlightned experornce".  You had to be lying big time last week when you said you did not use drugs but suggested that I try weed.  I guess that when you use drugs "Sue" comes out.
