Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

Forums work when people participate - so don't be bashful! Click the "Post Response" button to add your entry to the forum.

Well, Texas Tech leadership stepped up and backed off the DEI path described in the WSJ:

The university quickly reversed that policy on Tuesday after the piece ran on Monday, announcing in a written statement:

“Texas Tech University’s faculty hiring practices will always emphasize disciplinary excellence and the ability of candidates to support our priorities in student success, impactful scholarship, and community engagement. Recently, we learned of a department that required a diversity, equity, and inclusion statement in addition to the usual applicant materials as pan of a faculty search. We immediately withdrew this practice and initiated a review of hiring procedures across all colleges and departments. We will withdraw the use of these statements and evaluation rubrics if identified.”

Here is an interresting fact I never read in Texas history class.

From Texas State Historical Assn.

On this day in 1899, Andrea Castañón Villanueva (Madam Candelaria), who claimed to be a survivor of the battle of the Alamo, died at age 113 in San Antonio. She said she had been born in Laredo in 1785, though other sources say she was born at Presidio del Río Grande. She came to San Antonio when she was about twenty-five and married Candelario Villanueva, who she said was her second husband; thereafter she became known as Madam or Señora Candelaria. She was the mother of four children and raised twenty-two orphans. She nursed the sick and aided the poor. She claimed to have been in the Alamo during the 1836 battle and to have nursed the ailing Jim Bowie. Since evidence of survivors is sparse, her claims may never be confirmed, but in 1891 the Texas legislature granted her a pension of twelve dollars a month for being an Alamo survivor and for her work with smallpox victims in San Antonio. Madam Candelaria is buried in San Fernando Cemetery

Wayne, I was interested in what was happening in Laredo at the time wihtin this woman's life she claimed to have been born there.   I led me down the history of Laredo as well as the Mexcian American War.   It's quite a wide ranging story.   Basically, Mexico was approached by an envoy sent by Polk to buy N Mex, Ca, Az, and Texas for 25 million.   The Mexcian government was politically so challenged at the time that there was no way they could make a decision.

Mexico was neither inclined nor able to negotiate. In 1846 alone, the presidency changed hands four times, the war ministry six times, and the finance ministry sixteen times

The political situation in the US was less "revoltin" and worked within the Constitutional guidelines.  But, Northern states were not so much in favor of US expansion, wanting to have economic expansion as opposed to the alternative.  (Slavery thoughts.)  But, even though most were in favor of getting Ca, Oregon, etc,  they wanted a War to be a defensive war (requiring Mexico to attack first) rather than being an agressor.   Even so, Polk sent Zachary Taylor directly across the Nueces to Brownsville.   Mexico did not fight back until the US troops actually established a fort Brown and even then, (accordiing to Grant) they wouldn't fight back.

Finally, it was war, but still in dispute who shot first.

Laredo was in Mexico, assuming the accepted border of the Nueces River was the Tx/Mx border.   It was occupied by Texas Rangers as the treaty of Hildalgo was signed.   Residents had a vote/referendum as to whether to cede to the US or stay in Mexico.   It was overwhelmingly decided to be in Mexico, and the US was petitioned for that.   It was a petition which was rejected.   A large number of Laredoan's who had lived there for generations left for the other side of the border.

I was researching how the inhabitants were treated by the Rangers.   Just curious as why they would vote to be Mexican rather than US citizens.   Couldn't find much.

In checking the celebrity obituaries today, the guy whom then Vice President & current RINO Dick Cheney shot in the face while hunting back in 2006 when Harry was 78 - he just died at 95 last Saturday. At least he recovered to live such a long life, no thanks to Cheney. However Harry WAS stabbed in the back along with the rest of us by his friend Dick and his fellow RINO daughter Liz Cheney, in their Trump Derangement Syndrome.

I have been watching "The Chosen" at the official web site. Angel.com.  Very good series about Jesus and his followers.  I do not have cable so I watch it on my laptop.  This has no commercials. It was filmed near Weatherfoed anf Angel Studios have now built a sound studio  between Weatherford and Poole

Chief Quails At The Thought,

It is truly a shame Dick Cheney wasn't hunting with his daughter.  How convenient for folks to be Pro Choice once they exist due to the Pro Life stance of their parents

Went to Dallas Texans games in the Cotton Bowl in 60, 61, and maybe 62.   Pretty sure it was witih Bobby Cedarberg...

Abner Haynes.  Cotton Davidson, EJ Holub  and I think they had Lenny Dawson before they moved to KC

I just looked up Ernie Ladd, who they had, but not until in KC in 1967......

Lowell --Haynes (NTSU), Davidson (Baylor), Jack Spikes (TCU), Holub (Tech). I'm sure the idea was to sign "locals" to increase interest, but the Texans still couln't draw flies.

It seemed that there was a change in philosophy when they signed Curtis McClinton (Nebraska, I think).

Yes, Dawson was there in '62 when they won the AFL Championship. (I think we've discussed this before.) That was the year of the famous game in overtime when Haynes won the toss and elected to "kick." So the Oilers chose which end of the field to defend, while getting to receive the kickoff. He probably never lived that down.

ADDED

I just looked up Buck Buchanan. Monster! He was selected 265th in the NFL draft, but #1 in the AFL draft. First black player selected number 1. (Sounds pretty funny nowadays.) Died of lung cancer shortly before his induction into the Hall of Fame

Is it just me, or do most of the SuperBowl commercials suck?

ADDITION:

Is it just me, or did the SuperBowl halftime show suck?

I just read that Rihanna is worth $1.4 billion, with a B. Geez! She doesn't even lip sync well!

David,

Rihanna looked like a blood splat in the middle of a bunch of white chirping bird babies.  They could dance but all  she did waas walk around.  The lyrics on her music plagiarized every one else's hit and if she did not reverb them she would have sounded like my sister in the shower.  She has also gotten a belly that even that Chinese Red Jumpsuit couldn't hide.  Made me wish for the days when somebody showed the crowd an uncovered breast.

Disturbing video example of violence among youth. Note that the URL includes the word "amuse" but the clip is not amusing at all.

I  hope the black student was taken to jail and charged with assult. The person filming probably knew what was going to happen and should be punished as an assory.

If we punished assories, half the posters on this forum would be in jail.

Steve,

In most states the accesory to a crime is guilty of the crime.Last week in Dallas the father of a 14 yr old was convicted and senrenced to Life without parole for driving his son to and from a convience store in Garland where the teen shot and killed 3 teens inside the store. The father said he did not know the son had a gun or did the shooting.

From one assory to the rest...

I was searching for the Dallas Texans ad jingle...

"Join the zing team of pro football,

the dazzeling Dallas Texans...

Join them all in the AFL,

the dazzeling Dallas Texans......

Rackem Texans, Big D's Team...

Rackem Texans..............Zing.......Dallas Texans..."

I couldn't find it, but I did find this film of their 60 highlights...pretty cool if you're a fan...Note the goal post standards...

Also, the play at 9:15 against Denver was pretty awesome...

Edit...sorry didn't work...

I haven't looked it up, but I believe that AFL Championshjp game between the Texans and Oilers was even longer than the 1958 Championship game between the Colts and Giants. Clearly Johnny U had arrived!! What's the old saying? "Number Nineteen in your program; number One in your heart!"

I found myself pulling for the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes' sheer will to win with that bad leg! (Heck he even had a twenty or twenty five yard run!)Very good Super Bowl!

A bit of an RHS connection: My sister was taught history at RHS by Norma Lynn Knobel........now Norma Hunt! And when Lamar Hunt and she, after a brief courtship...,,we're to be  married in her parents home in Richardson

The rest is history.....
