Gary Barab, 72, passed away in his home on November 28, 2023, after a valiant fight against pancreatic cancer. Mr. Barab was born to Celia Medow Barab and Oscar Barab on March 22, 1951 in Harvey, IL. He is survived by brother Stuart Barab, sister Dr. Helene Barab, step siblings, nieces, and nephews.
After moving to Texas as a youngster, he graduated from Richardson High School and pursued his education earning a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin in 1974. Mr. Barab was self-employed for most of his years, retiring in 2019. He exhibited an impeccable work ethic in business.
Mr. Barab was a collector of antiquities and art. He was an ardent music lover and enjoyed the live music scene in Austin of old, frequenting Armadillo World Headquarters, Soap Creek Saloon, Antone’s, and The Paramount just to name a few. The Texas Chili Parlor and Threadgill’s were also longtime favorites.
Being devoted to physical fitness since college, Mr. Barab continued to lift weights and serve as a personal trainer until his last year. He was a man of extreme discipline. He was also an ardent advocate for animal rescue and adoption. He personally oversaw the needs of many feral cats.
He never passed up an opportunity to give. Mr. Barab was a philanthropist who diligently contributed to many charities. Therefore, donations to charity in his memory would be most appropriate.
