LELA READ
Lela Elaine "Laney" Read, 49, of Independence, died Saturday morning (Sept.
30, 2000) at Mercy Hospital, Independence.
Mrs. Read was born Aug. 28, 1951 in Independence to George Milton and Betty
J. (Mason) Beidleman. She was raised in Overland Park and her family later
moved to Richardson, Texas. She graduated from Richardson High School and
later graduated from North Texas State University at Denton in 1972. Upon
her graduation she began her business career with Texas Instruments.
She married Bryson Read on June 17, 1974 in Dallas. She transferred to
Houston while her husband was in dental school. In 1975 she went to work
for M.W. Kellogg Co. In 1978 the couple moved to Independence. She worked
as her husband's Dental Assistant and later Office Manager and left work
in 1999 due to health reasons.
Mrs. Read was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Independence.
She was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi. She served on the Neewollah
Committee and was the recipient of Leadership Independence in 1988 as well
as serving on the board. She was an avid softball player and won the first
homerun derby for the Independence Black Sox.
Survivors include her husband Dr. Bryson Read of the home; two sons, Tim
and Robert Read, both of Independence; her mother, Betty Beidleman of Independence;
a sister, Lynn Walker of Tulsa; a brother, Hank Beidleman of Garland, Texas;
and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church,
Penn and Maple, Independence. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence.
Friends may call Monday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends
from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Webb and Rodrick Funeral Home, Independence.
The family suggests memorial contributions to either the First United Methodist
Church or FORPAZ. Memorial contributions may be left with the funeral home.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Webb and Rodrick Funeral
Home.
