Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

Forums work when people participate - so don't be bashful! Click the "Post Response" button to add your entry to the forum.

No broken pipes here. No temps below freezing.... central Mexico though.
We turn off the water to the house in Texas when we are away, so I am hoping to not find problems when we return.
We were told that several states in Mexico, including Jalisco, would face rolling blackouts to help northern Mexico, but we were never without power.
I left Texas on the Saturday just before the horrific weather hit.

We really lucked out last week; we didn't lose power or water.  We live near Northwest Hwy and Jupiter, about a mile from a fire station and maybe three miles from Doctors Hospital.  My mother, who lives in the El Dorado near Arapaho and Floyd, had power but a pipe burst over their kitchen and they still have not been able to cook for the residents.  They are catering in meals from different restaurants and she has been complaining that the food is too spicy for her.  My sister lives on the east side of Richardson and lost power for about 24 hours and her house got down to 49.  They cooked dinner on a camp stove in the garage in the dark. Friends in Plano with solar panels still didn't have heat because the snow caked the panels on thier 30 degree pitch roof which was too dangerous to climb up and clear them off.  Their pool froze and they don't know if the pipes are OK or not.  Other friends in south Arlinton lost power and 1/4 of their living room ceiling fell when a pipe burst.  Luckily, their son's friend is a contractor and he came over the next day and got it fixed.  I'm sure many will be waiting a long time to have pipes fixed and water restored.

As Sandra said, Bob and Frances Brown were on that flight from Denver to Hawaii that lost an engine.

I'm not sure if this photo is before or after the event!

This is one of the videos Bob posted on Facebook. Not sure if you can access it.

I must be missing something about the Ted Cruz thing.

Did he do anything illegal? Was he caught not social distancing, or not wearing a mask? Did he fail to cough into his sleeve?

What duties did he have in Texas during the weather crisis? He's not involved in any way in the management of the state -- no line authority. What's the big deal? Did he desert his post? Would he have helped morale? Would he have kept my pool from freezing over?

All the Democrats who are castigating him -- what do they care? They hate him anyway. Better if he's out of the country -- one less evil Republican. Or would they have been so uplifted by his presence that neither snow nor sleet nor gloom of night would have dampened their spirits if only Senator Ted were on Texas soil??

I don't get it.

David,

This headline is for you:

02/23/21 12:15 AM #20378

Janalu Jeanes (Parchman)

I'm with you, Cordell!  I don't get it either except that he, Cruz, is an EVIL Republican, a White Supremacist, and a Nazi immitator, evidently.  Ever since the January 6th fiasco that 99% of Republicans condemn, we horrible Republicans have been thrown into the group, by association (the Dems have determined) of those rebel-rousers, those idiots who ransacked the Capitol.  They have decided that we who voted for Trump, must be forever labeled as insane and unworthy of ever voting again, if they can figure out a way to keep us locked away in a camp, say, like the Uighurs in China.  We are a disgrace to our country, they think, especially certain leaders of their party.  That is why they have DC behind fencing, controlled by the National Guard!  They honestly think that masses of us are a murderous group, and that we will be trying to "attack them again," as soon as we get some mysterious message on our computers from some fantastical 'Q' leader, and that we will once again come flying to DC, with our backpacks full of weapons to seize control.

And I just read that, according to Coca Cola teaching manuals of late, "White folks are being encouraged to 'be less White.'   What!  Why should we try to be less White?  Are we supposed to believe that we are to have shame because of the way we were born.....in our white skins?  Are the Blacks or brown-skinned people ashamed of themselves for how they were born?

NO!  They seem to be very proud folks around me, and they don't mind showing their presence right up in my face, on some occasions, when I'm in their company at a mall, or restaurant, or other gathering places.  They often glare at me as if encouraging me to say something, with confrontational stare-downs, even though I try to stay clear of them, when I notice their daring glances.

As for Ted Cruz, he didn't break any laws that I'm aware of, he just decided to get away from sleeping in a sleeping bag in front of his fireplace, as were the other members of his family.  He and his wife decided they could catch a flight to Cancun, and beat the cold snap, since they had the money to do so.  If any of the rest of us had the money and the opportunity to do so, we would probably have done the same.  But there are so many Texans who are down right "jealous" of his wealthy and opportunity, that they think they have the right to shame him for doing what he did.  We are, in my opinion, 'coveting' what Ted Cruz has, which we are warned or instructed not to do, because we are foolishly 'falling into a trap of desiring what that man has' wishing we could have/do the same.  Actually, some of us could do the same if we had accomplished what Cruz has accomplished, if we had tried our best to actually DO what he has done.

People are saying that he should not have left Texas, he should have suffered the cold just as WE DID!  Why?  Would any of us have felt better knowing that he, his wife and daughters were sleeping and eating in front of their fireplace, just as WE were doing?  Does that mean that "If I have to endure the cold and discomfort, then BY DAMN, SO DO YOU!"  Isn't that being a bit selfish and vindictive....and mean-spirited?  What does anyone gain by acting or feeling that way?

"Come on MAN!"   Ted Cruz was not in charge of the people who ran the energy company responsible for the electrical failure, and I'm sure he had his laptop and his iphone with him, so that he would have been able to respond to anyone who had a need of his assistance, and would have come back to Texas within a few hours if his help was needed.  I'm sure he contacted all the right people before he left, to see if he was needed in any way, as he is not an irresponsible man, or senator.

But I guess he traveled on a commercial flight, with his family, so he was "seen" by other people on the flight, and he must have realized that folks on the flight were startled and were 'a-twitter with texting and whispers going around, so he figured out that he was about to become a slammed person on Twitter's SHAME FORUM!  I suspect alot of the 'gossip' floating around the plane was from people who dislike him for being a Republican, and for being one of those senators who wanted to request an accounting of votes, that horrible day on January 6th, even though he had a perfect 'Right" to do so, along with the other Congressmen and women with him that day.  They were not protesting Biden's upcoming inauguration, but were hoping to get their words and presentation 'on the record,' with their desires to improve requirements for the next election.

Now, as we have witnessed, Ted Cruz is a marked man walking, and is being vilified in the mainstream press, as a sleezy, sneak-away senator, who left Texans behind DYING in the cold.  It's as if he left us on his living room sofa, telling us "Adios losers!"  "Stay under covers and eat leftovers from my 'frig, 'cause I can't afford to take y'all along!"

I read in the paper about an Plano 18yr old black man was arrested on Feb 16 at 10:45pm after he was spotted walking down the street in sub-freezing temp with only a tee shirt and pants on.  He was walking home from work and did not feel he needed help and did not want to have anything to do with the police.  He was taken into custody for his own protection.  He and his parents are upset claiming the only reason he was detained was because he was black.  I wonder what they would be saying if the police left him alone and he suffered frostbite or death from the extreme cold.  Maybe the parents should have taught the young man that when it gets cold you put on a coat to protect yourself.

Wayne,

Here is the Plano PD body-cam footage released after the event.

 https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=252445259709034

Here is my post on NextDoor:

I support the police. It seems that all the highly publicized episodes of alleged police brutality occurred with individuals who were uncooperative. If the police ask questions, answer them. If they give an order, follow it. It isn't just appropriate behavior -- it's smart behavior. To suggest or justify that a person of color doesn't need to cooperate because he/she fears the police is a non-starter. In that case, no person of color needs to pay any attention to police. By defending this type of behavior, you actually put people of color at greater risk by encouraging them to resist police. Further, defending someone who doesn't follow lawful orders, and thereby undermining the police, puts us all at risk by causing police to be too timid. A woman was murdered in my neighborhood by someone who was seen loitering along the walking path.

David, Janalu, Steve:
The Dems have to hate; it's all they really seem to believe in. Since they can't really look closely at their leaders or policies, they have to fall back on enemies, real or imagined, like Trump, Bush, Rush, Sarah Palin, Cruz, and their supporters.

Personally, I think it has to do with regression to the mean. The Flynn Effect is a name for the rise in average standardized tests of intelligence from the early 20th century to the 1980s, at least in the First World. There is data out in the world of psychometricians that suggest that since then there has been a sort of regress Flynn Effect going on. In other words, averages are going down fairly sharply.

Personally I blame look-see reading instruction which replaced phonics as the standard method of teaching reading.

The result is endemic stupidity and the replacement of critical reasoning with obeseince to officially designated authority. For examples, look at COVID, global warming, or election fraud.

CocaCola wants its white employees "to be less white." I tried to be less white for years in my youth, and now I have to go to the dermatologist to get stuff frozen off and cut out.

A headline you will never see: "CocaCola wants its black employees to be less black."

David C:

I think the main point about Ted Cruz is that, during the worst days his state has endured in our lifetime, much less his, he flew out of the country to a warmer climate and did nothing, either physically or legally to help his fellow Texans. Even if for 'looks', he could have helped in food lines, created a bill to stop the freeze from happening again - anything to just help.

Plus, his wife even said he went to Mexico because it was warmer, which is true. I had to rent a hotel room - then the hotel lost power. I would have loved to go to Mexico during the catastrophe, but my wife has an auto immune disorder that keeps her out of any types of groups, much less out of the country. But that's not particularly my gripe about him.

Personally, and this is just my view, I believe congress men/women have way too many vacations/days off and if they vote/do not vote so that the government is shut down, I believe they should not be paid during that time period - not just the poor regular people who are caught in the middle. I know this has nothing to do with what I started with, but because of his job, he was able to just up and leave for a trivial family matter in the middle of a state wide crisis and that really irritates me. Of course, I'm retired, so it doesn't really apply to me, but the average guy in Texas can't take off work that easily whenever he wants.

I agree that it looked bad when Cruz left the state, and it was a dumb move politically. But what was he going to do by staying here? He's not the governor or any other state official. In fact, if he had made any pronouncements, it could have even caused further confusion. He wouldn't have made my life better by staying here and sharing in the misery.

That said, he would have been a smarter politician if he had stayed here and gone on television (for those who could see television) to berate ERCOT and show compassion for those who were struggling with the power and water issues. I suppose some people would have felt better with some verbal hand-holding, and in that regard, it would have shown better leadership. But it would have done nothing to improve the situation.

I can certainly vouch for you at Hall Sprinkler. I got a good tan there as well, BUT nothing like you. Sometimes we'd work on the same crew. Those were fun times. I remember one time we were together on George Hall's crew at Stemmons and Inwood. We were in the median and George was measuring out 8 feet with his tape measure for a sprinkler head placement. But before he did you and I had a bet who would be the closest by just walking it off and putting our toe on the spot. I somehow was spot on. George threw down his tape measure and said "I don't need this anymore." I can't remember what the bet was for, but I think it was for a Coke.

Were you with us at lunch at Mr. Chicken (5 Points) when Mike Marks ate some guys rolls he left on his plate? Turns out the guy only went to the bathroom and came back to finish his rolls. Mike had the rolls stuffed in his mouth!

Ron,

I remember eating at Mr. Chicken a lot of times.  I don't recall that specific instance.  You and Lowell have better long time memory than me.

What I do remember is that I was digging a ditch there in the hot sun and looking in the window of University Computer and watching those engineers and programmers in short sleeves sitting on their ass looking at a screen.  I think that was the moment I decided I might want to be an engineer.

I just found this.  From our childhood

The Lone Ranger

As generally depicted, the Lone Ranger conducts himself by a strict moral code based on that put in place by Striker at the inception of the character. It read:

I believe that to have a friend,
a man must be one.

That all men are created equal
and that everyone has within himself
the power to make this a better world.

That God put the firewood there
but that every man
must gather and light it himself.

In being prepared
physically, mentally, and morally
to fight when necessary
for what is right.

That a man should make the most
of what equipment he has.

That 'this government,
of the people, by the people
and for the people'
shall live always.

That men should live by
the rule of what is best
for the greatest number.

That sooner or later...
somewhere...somehow...
we must settle with the world
and make payment for what we have taken.

That all things change but truth,
and that truth alone, lives on forever.

In my Creator, my country, my fellow man.[15]

It doesn't take too much memory to recall Mr. Chicken.  Especially fun when Buddy was there behind the counter and his car outside....

I call that upper Greenville.   Mr. Chicken, TGIFridays, The Circus, Leather Balls Salloon, Vehon's, Up Your Alley, Rose's Hamburgers, The Playboy Club, Tony Roma's...some I am leaving out...
