Message Forum

Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

Forums work when people participate - so don't be bashful! Click the "Post Response" button to add your entry to the forum.

Ron,

Great post!  Bravo!  You are a good man!

Lance quoted David:

TommyI think the reason the St. Mark's group decided to invite me but not you is because they wanted to limit the invitation list to narcissists. Either that, or because I was there for two years and you were only there for one.

In case anyone wonders, I was called a narcissist, and that's why my response to the question (of why I was invited to the St. Mark's reunion and Tommy wasn't) included that sarcastic comment.

I too am a life long Methodist and I knew one of the great theologians Dr Albert Outler at SMU, Perkins

I tought what was called the Weslian quadratlateral.  Take a the for parts connected and in tension like the 4 corners of a square with God/HolySpirit in the middle.  The four cornners were, Tradition, Experience, Scripture and Reason.  A persons belief comes from his/her own experiences, reason, understanding of scriptures and their traditions. As a result every person will have differing understandings.  All have value and we can learn from each other as long as we can loving discuss our beliefs and learn from others.

Ron,

Thanks for the advice.  Do you know where I can find a good yardman?

Steve

I don't think you need a yardman. I'm pretty sure your backyard is in order! Thanks for the humble response!

Wayne

I was a longtime member of Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas and long time member of McFarlin United Methodist Chuch in Norman, OK. Leighton Farrell was head Pastor at Highland Park. If you ever went to The First Methodist in Richardson when we were in school he was the head Pastor there. When I moved back to Dallas from Norman, I found Leighton at Highland Park. It was just "home" to me. In Norman, Dr Phil Fenn was our head Pastor and I loved that man - still do. At one time I was on three committees. He has retired now, but every time I come back to Dallas I always try make it by Norman and get coffee or lunch with him. I actually moved my membership back to McFarlin when I retired and moved to Asheville from Dallas.

You too believe in the core of our Doctrine and that being "Moderation", or as you eluded toleration and respect of others. I appeciate your comments.

Lance,

Consider that many people drop in to the Forum irregularly, so they may wonder what that comment meant, especially since it occurred five years ago.

Although perhaps you were suggesting that everyone knows that I am a narcissist. Hmmm. I can't remember if it was you who called me a narcissist, a monicker which I strongly believe does not apply to me. I will say that I was appreciative of this comment posted by my friend Hollis and addressed to me on October 26, 2015.

"Your recently being labeled a narcissist:  takes one to know one.  However, not a term that I associate with you."

Then you responded to Hollis.

"I was unaware your association has now included becoming a licensed psychiatrist!?!"

Hollis, Sandra, Jan and Hull,

I have been taking some time to teach my grandson, Marcus how to be a Panhandle cowboy with style.  Got him some new duds at Cavenders this week.  He'll be four on Jan 17 so I guess I need to start looking for a cow pony.

Very cute, Steve, including the pose. Is that an homage to an album cover? One thought -- that belt buckle is pretty big. If he is in a hurry to wee-wee, I'm not sure he can get to his zipper!

Dr. David Nabarro, the World Health Organization’s special envoy on COVID-19, urged world leaders this week to stop “using lockdowns as your primary control method" for blunting a virus surge.

Bob D, or anyone else  --

The hearings for Amy Coney Barrett's nomination to the Supreme Court begin tomorrow. Correct me if I am wrong about the following.

  • Chief Justice John Marshall was responsible for establishing the prominent role of the Supreme Court within the U.S. government.
  • He was nominated by John Adams on January 20, 1801.
  • He was confirmed by the Senate on January 27, 1801.
  • The presidential election, which everyone knew Adams would lose, was February 17, 1801.
  • The nomination was less than one month before the election.

This story is about the exodus from high tax states, but the good part is between 1:28 and 2:18.

David,

Yesterday I saw a story about the group of young people "Bling Ring" in Hollywood who broke into a number of celebraties homes including Lindsey Lohan and stole over $3 million in cloths, jewlery, and money and when they were sentanced by a CA judge the sentences ranged from 4 yrs down to community service. The liberals in CA don't think steeling $millions is a very big crime.  Just say no no misguided person.  Ther are no "bad" people.

I am glad here in Texas the Jury normally sentences the person.

Steve,

That pic of your grandson in his finery is adorable!  Did you get him to hold that pose with a wad of Double Bubble?  I have a similar photo of my son, Robert, in his boots and pint-sized Stetson, but he is sitting in a small, red rocking chair, which was an obvious misstep, and puts a wholly different focus on the outcome!

David,

You made an excellent point about the election of 1801, when Adams was defeated.  That was a very informative post for us to have in our repertoire!  Thanks!

Janalu,

Double Bubble is so old school, almost as old as Bazooka.  You have to bribe em with Big League Chew grape shredded bubble gum.  Repackage it from the celophane tobacco pouch into an old Copenhagen can.  That way he gets the round wear circle in the back pocket of his Wranglers.  Levis or Lee's won't do for a real cowboy.

David,

You are right about the buckle.  He has to call for help until we get the leather broke in on the new belt.

Debbie Cathey (Havens)

My friend Randy is quite a prolific writer. I wanted to share his latest...oh, and I too changed.

CH-CH-CH-CHANGES

I know you keep telling yourself that you can change the world.

Or, maybe a little more teamwork, we can change the world.

Are you sure that you will like it once it is changed?

Sometimes, it feels like your life just needs a little more excitement, a good cause, a purpose to get up every morning.

Adrenalin is great, isn’t it?

Being a part of something, doing something, taking action, seeing results, all make the heart beat a little faster. The cheers of the crowd make you feel like you are really making a difference.

Like you are changing the world.

Suppose you win.

You get up the next morning, the sun is shining, you turn on the tv, and you see the crowds cheering, and it feels so good.

In a little while, though, the euphoria disappears, and the same old restless boredom rises inside you.

The world around you is changing fast, but you are the same as you were before.

Suppose you lose.

Disappointment becomes like bile rising in your throat.

After all that work, energy expended, meetings, planning sessions, protests...was it all for nothing?

You turn on the tv, and you see the crowds cheering. How can they be happy? Everything is the same as it was!

Your heart sinks, and you realize that you are the same as you were before.

You haven’t changed at all.

DO YOU THINK, “ THERE MUST BE SOMETHING MORE?”

You have to start to wonder, what am I here for, where am I going, is there anyone who cares?

So, start to think about it. If the world you are seeing seems to be divided in half, one side raging against the other, who is behind this turmoil?

Imagine for a moment that maybe there was a mind behind this whole creation. The workings of the seasons, reproductive properties of the plants and animals, even the processes that you know are working in your own body are too complex to have just happened. Randomly.

It’s actually pretty amazing if you think about it.

But, when things start to go wrong, you wonder why.

And that is when you are close to seeing the truth.

The Creator must have an enemy, one who is intent on breaking down the Creator’s work, and rising to the highest pinnacle of rule himself.

And he needs subjects.

And, there you have it. Division and turmoil and disorder and confusion.

You don’t have to choose him as your king, you only have to reject the Creator.

Then, you belong to the anti-creator, the destroyer, the accuser, the father of lies.

If that is the side you are on, you are trapped in a life that ultimately will not satisfy.

Now, here is the good news. You can switch sides, if you are trapped in the enemy’s camp.

And, if you want to switch (and not everyone will, but if you do), you can return to the One who made you.

Call out to Him, tell Him that you want His rule over you, and that you want to return to the Life He planned for you. He has already paid your way back in.

He sent His son, Jesus, to pay the price of your rebellion. He died, so that you can live.

He is offering you forgiveness for your rebellion.

Forever.

All because He loves you.

You get to choose.

He will change you.

He will put His life in you.

Then, you can begin to change the world, because, His power begins to live in you.

It happened to me.

I don't know if I remember you at RHS - I think I do. You certainly have a grasp on your faith. I enjoyed your imparting wisdom through your own experience. I believe we all share a commonality when we submit that we are a faulty bunch. When we try to do it on our own, we typically fail. We gain strength when we admit our weakness and ask Him for help and guidance.

Thank you for the kind words about the Methodist faith from Wayne and my comments. I grew up in a mixed disciplined house. My mom was a devout Southern Baptist and my dad was raised Methodist. It was always kind of a divide in our household. However by junior high I was allowed to go to either church AS long as I went to church. My older brother was entrenched in the Southern Baptist belief and criticized me for deviating from that discipline. I found him to be too hard core for me. In layman's terms, it was "His way or the highway", as he percieved the Baptist doctrine and I was a sinner in his eyes. He spent years trying to "Save Me". Then he went through a divorce and I ended up saving him. He has been remarried for over 20 years now and is still a devout Christian in a non- demoninational church. I only tried to help him through my faith and let him decide where that would take him. I did not pressure him to become a Methodist, rather instead re-visit that "Dart Board" of faith to make sure his eye's were on the "Bull's Eye". My brother Joe and I have the greatest loving and caring relationship than EVER before. Praise God!

Debbie,

Loved the lyrics and the Truth.

Lance,

You have finally grasped the meaning of the word breviloquent.  More of that, or should I say less of that, Please!

Does anyone remember the 'Amos and Andy' TV series?  I was remembering a particular episode the other day of the wife of Kingfish, named Sapphire, and her older mother, when the ladies were preparing to go to a movie theatre to see a movie, but the older lady wanted to get popcorn at one theatre, since it was her favorite, and then drive over to another theatre to watch the movie.  Sapphire's husband was exasperated with the whole situation, but decided to abide by their wishes in order to keep peace in the family.

I thought of that while I was popping popcorn for Charles and I to munch while watching Netflix here at home.

It is so weird to have these flashes of memory come to my mind when I least expect them.

Kingfish was probably my favorite character.  Funny guys!

It appears to me that Amy Coney Barrett is almost a clone of Justice Scalia, who was much admired by so many in how he deterrmined his opinions, and she is in some ways like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, in that she says she is not going to say beforehand how she will determine her opinions, but will simply read and interpret the law as written.  She seems perfect for the position, don't you agree?

As for how she will 'read' the Obamacare rulings, she says she has not formed any firm ideas yet, but will read it all carefully and judge its merits.  That is just what Justice Ginsburg would have said too, I believe.  She also is in agreement with Justice Ginsburg when saying that the President does not suddenly lose power in his 4th year, but governs fully until the end of the term.

I'm glad to see that she is not 'wish-washy' like Chief Justice Roberts, as he attempted to rearrange the original ACA to have it read as a tax, rather than as it originally was written.  I heard that many lawyers were furious by his actions, saying his attitude about "Having his court seen throughout history in a certain way of his determination" was a terrible action to take, and that he set an ignoble precedent.

Our legislators are going to have to learn how to legislate again, as well as compromise, and stop sending so much of ther unfinished business to the courts to hash out, which is NOT what the courts are supposed to do.

One more point.  I get amused at those who believe that we Republicans are voting again for Trump, our favorite guy (cough, cough) when actually, we are voting against the radical left agenda that we see coming down the pike, if Biden and his cabal, win.  THAT is why we are voting the way we are/will.

Just saw Chris Coons talking to a newsman, whining that he was astonished at how many young judges Trump has put into place since he entered office.  He was terribly dismayed at it all, yet he doesn't seem to remember how may judges Obama jammed through after Harry Reid eliminated the filibuster for judge placement, just for that very reason.  Democrats have forgotten that turn about is fair play.
