Message Forum

Welcome to the Richardson High School Message Forum.

The Message Forum is an ongoing dialogue among classmates. The goal is to encourage friendly interaction, including interaction among classmates who really didn't know each other. Experience on the site has revealed that certain topics tend to cause friction and hard feelings, especially politics and religion.

Although politics and religion are not completely off-limits, classmates are asked to be positive in their posts and not to be too repetitive or allow a dialog to degenerate into an argument.

Forums work when people participate - so don't be bashful! Click the "Post Response" button to add your entry to the forum.

I wish there was a "like" ir "love" button option
...the Scripture you shared is very "deep". Pondering the magnitude of rejpicing when suffering for the cause of our Lord is sobering. All who believe...as well as those considering whether or not to follow Jesus need to realize the seriousness of committing to Him. It is NOT simply being "religious".#neverlookingback

Jimmy,

I think it is Ricky Hall in the stripes, and Randy George on his back. Maybe David Reha with someone's hands on his shoulders?

Rock Rollins is the one who is at the top. Tommy Knutson with the glasses? Maybe Doris Smith in the background?

I dunno. Best I could do.

Just watched Patriots Day with Mark Wahlberg. Really good movie about the Boston Marathon bombing. Nice to see the good reception for the police at a Red Sox game at the end of the movie.

Jimmy,

I was working on this photo earlier today on the other forum and had guessed some names before I saw what David had posted above just a while ago.  But rather than erase it, I decided to leave it, since I added a few comments in it.

Some of the faces in the photo from Heights Elem.,... looks like Rock Rollins, ( at top of photo) Steve Hopkemeier or Hopkemeyer,(lower far right)-- Tommy Knutson with the glasses, David Reha,(Center, with hands on his shoulders)-- possibly Randy George on boy's back---David says boy with striped shirt is Ricky Hall.  Other boys are too blurry.....

In the background, it looks like the girl known as Doris.....(can't remember her last name)  David says her last name is Smith.

The photo may have been the last day of school when there was a party atmosphere in most classes, and the bulletin boards were blank, as materials were packed up for the year's end.  Some students brought cameras to take photos of friends.....

Also, I wanted to tell you to Google--- "The symbol of the Holy Trinity"....notice the symbol with the words.   It helps us understand "The Trinity," of God, His Son, and The Holy Spirit.

You asked me one time way, way back about how to understand The Trinity," and I think this symbol helps explain it best of all.  I didn't know your address, as I was going to mail you a symbol photo I copied from somewhere, but anyway, now you can see the one on Google.  Hope it helps!

As such a proponent for the rapture as you have described yourself, let me ask you a question.  What would be the difference in you and a large group of Christians going up in smoke in a nuclear attack, and Jesus beconing you from the Heavens to come up to meet Him in the air as you describe your verses in Thessalonians 2?   I would say not much.  The only difference would be your perception of the event.  A man of faith would say, "This is just what Jesus promised."  A man of wavering faith might say, "Oh Jesus, protect me from this nuclear attack."

Lance, I know we are seeing the beginning of the final chapters of the Age of Grace. I am unsure EXACTLY how it will play out in minute details, but I DO know that the One Who holds it all in His hands tells us to not fear but to trust. The security of knowing that I am His and NOTHING can touch my life (as Kay Arthur wrote) "unless filtered through His fingers of love", gives me focus and courage. When He was a young boy, discussing Scriptures with the Jewish teachers in the synagogue, Jesus asked Joseph and Mary, "Did you not know that I must be about my Father's business?" That is our mission...to be about the Father's business...until He calls us to go to our TRUE home. No. Matter. What. And, you're right...it isn't easy...but no matter what we are called to go through, it fades in comparison with what our sinless Savior went through in taking our sin upon Himself and embracing death for us. To think about the Author of Life, Who IS "THE Way, THE Truth and THE Life" gifting us with this selfless, restoring act is another "deep" pondering moment. Walk on.

Steve,
Jumping right in there, I would say that when my soul becomes unsettled, it is usually because I alliw my focus off of my Savior and the Commission He has given. My unsettled feelings usually come when I become anxious about friends and family who do not know the Savior. Releasing them to His care while still interceding for them carries with it a heavy heart, knowing that without Him they will face the unthinkable wrath of our holy God, while simultaneously I experience peace, knowing that out of a love beyond our own capacity, the Holy Spirit is working to bring them to Jesus that they too may fellowship with the Father.
I will turn 70 years old tomorrow. Whether I am called home through death or by the Rapture, my focus will continue to be on following the path He has ordained for me on this side of Heaven.
Saying all of that, it IS unsettling to know that a nuclear war as described in Ezekiel and in Revelation IS coming...and will affect those who go through the Great Tribulation. We should weep and pray over lost souls as we reach out to "bring them into the safety of the Ark" BEFORE the flood of wrath rains down upon those who refuse to accept the grace of God.

I am not a great believer in the Rapture. When good things happen, I express thanks. When bad things happen, I ask for understanding. If the end of civilization comes, I think it will be the responsibility of man (and woman), not God. On the other hand, if it comes by way of an asteroid, I'll have to re-think my philosophy.

This isn't meant as a religious comment, but the song is interesting -- first real rap hit on the pop charts. Note: the first reaction to the tall black man in the white suit and hat is probably one of possible racism. However, I understand that he was the choreographer.

I heard something on TV and it reminded me of phrases that can't be used anymore, like "I'm free, white and 21," which I first heard  when I was about 10. I asked Martha about it, and she had never heard it. So I wondered if it had been a commonly used phrase, and I googled it, of course. This youtube video of movie clips popped up.

Lance,
Thank you for the birthday laugh! Yep, I am still here...and so are you! One reason I believe the Church will be raptured is that the 1st part if Revelation is written to the various Churches, highlighting important aspects of/warnings to each one...then, beginning with Chapter 4, no more mention of/addressing the Church. Also, Romans 5:9 says that
"Much more, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him." The last chapters of Revelation (As well as portions of Daniel) prophetically address the Dispensation of Wrath which will follow the Dispensation of Grace.

Regardless of views of pre, mid, or post tribulation rescue of His People, the MOST important question to answer is, "Have you truly come to faith in the One Who paid the price in order to grant salvation to all who, realizing that ALL fall short of being 'good enough" to stand before our holy Creator? THAT is the question that MUST be answered. Religion is meaningless without being born anew in Christ.

David, I believe that God alone has the Sovereign power over this earth. "He's got the whole world in His hands"...i rest in that thought. I think I would remain in a state of anxiety if I thought that the ultimate destiny of those on earth was dependent upon fallen man.

I do love these kind of discussions and appreciate the mutual respect I see as we share. For that, this Birthday Girl of 7 decades says thank you!

Happy Birthday, Debbie!

To reach seven decades is quite a feat, helped by luck and blessings!

Hope you have been having a wonderful day doing your favorite activites, and I hope you have seven decades more to look forward to!  Wouldn't that be wild and crazy for all to witness?

Hang tough!  You can do it, if anyone can......

We enjoy musicals in the Cordell family. One Broadway star whom I have seen in two shows on Broadway is Brian Stokes Mitchell. We saw opening night of Kiss Me, Kate  with the late Marin Mazzie and in Ragtime, in which he originated the role of Coalhouse Walker, Jr. He won a Tony for Kiss Me, Kate. After the Kiss Me, Kate performance, we waited at the stage door to talk with him. We had a connection in that my son was in Ragtime, but after Stokes, as he is known, left the show. He was very gracious. We also saw him in a concert with some other Broadway folks at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. He also had a recurring part in Frazier as a very haughty resident of Frazier's building.

Anyway, when I got home from the office today, I flipped on the TV and saw this.

Happy pre Tribulation Birthday and I hope your day is full of rapture.  That's the earthly kind and the only kind I think we will ever witness.  Thank you for taking up the cross in your postings and I appreciate your adherence to the truth of the "Word."

Janalu,
Thank you! However many days the Author of Life grants to me, I will accept. I know that each moment, each day, each year is a gift.I pray I never take it for granted. Another 70? Hmmmm...no thanks...Yesterday was unique. I spent tome with family, but also attended the Memorial service of a great man and friend who exemplified what it meant to "Walk the Walk". No matter how many days are in my future this side of Heaven, I pray that I will be used to share the love of the One whose love knows no limits.

David,  I think that is me in that photo.  I'm amazed that you have that good of a memory.  I couldn't name anyone in that picture.  Were you in Miss Harper's class ? She was my favorite teacher in elementary school.  I think that was 5th grade. Maybe 3rd. Don't remember for sure.

I just heard Gordon Chang, American atty. and author of several books about China, say that we MUST de-couple from China as China now has a blood lust towards trying out their new weapons of war, just as they began to try out recently on Indian soldiers at the Indian/Chinese border, and as they continue using new ships and aggressive boats in the south China sea, watching closely all US/Taiwan news reports, as well as closely observing Japanese developments.  Their navy and their air force have greatly increased recently, with experts saying that their navy is a larger naval fleet than the US has, with more submarines being a threat to all countries.  Also, the Chinese army has grown to numbers not seen there before, in recent history.

The sophisticated drone that went down over Iran back during the Obama administration, was stripped of its highly secret components, and those components were given to China, much to the worry of the US, while Obama did nothing at all, except scold them harshly.  Again, as China has done SO many times in the past, the Chinese have greatly benefitted from US technology being stolen from under our noses, just as Chang points out repeatedly.

Chang warns that the Chinese have ramped up their theory that they no longer want to be a member of our current system of fair trade between countries, but rather want to develop their own system where they are the directors of the system, "calling the shots," at will, with other countries obeying whatever they wish.  They have begun to implement their new ideas now, not waiting any longer to see what happens with US matters, or other matters around the world.

Another indicator of  China's "tone" towards us being different, was noticed when they threatened to not give us the medicines we were trying to purchase from them, at the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak in our country.  They told us we had better 'behave ourselves,' or they would cease allowing us to buy antibiotics and other needed drugs.

Chang is trying to sound the alarm for immediate vigilance toward the great threat looming.

A lot of theologians do not believe that Revelations is  a great future event.  There are a number of books on Revelations but only John is in our Bible. Their understanding is the book is referring to Rome and the Empire.  Rome sits on 7 hills. There is a lot of code words that refer to Rome, Ceasar and Empire.  They were used to protect themselves from imprisonment of worse if the writings were discovered.  By using code words they could always deny they were talking about Rome.

But if a rapture or second comming happens we cannot predict it. Rev. 3.3 states "If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee" JKB
Paul originally believed he would see the second comming of Christ in his lifetime,  Later in his life he realized it would happen sometime after his life.
Over the years a number of preachers have claimed to understand the signs and set a dat of when the second comming or rapture would happen and all have been wrong.
The Seventh day Adventests started after the 3rd or fourth date their leader set came and passed. Now they say we are in the "End Times".
I rember whan in Richardson JR High there was a prediction of the end of the world and it did not happen.
There are a number of groups that believe we are in the "End Times/Days":, Several are the Reorganized Church of the Latter Day Saints (not Mormans), Church of the Latter Day Saints (Morman).
I take solace in doing what we are tasked to do and praising Jesus Christ.

Today I watched "The Big Lift" with Montgomery Clifft from 1950. It takes place during the Berlin Air Lift June 24, 1948 and May 12, 1949.  It was filmed in Berlin and shows the distruction and efforts to clean up the city. I has 2 US actors Clift and Paul Douglas.  The rest were either Us AirForce personell of German actors.

Hi, David Reha,

No, I wasn't in Mrs. Harper's class. My teachers (1st through 6th) were Mrs. Lowe, Mrs. Peveto, Miss Taylor, Mrs. Taylor (and Mrs. Wright for reading), Mr. Leewright, and Mrs. Fagg.

There are many class photos on this website. If anyone wants one of them, I can email the digital version. I might try to add names to more of them. I'm pretty good at recognizing kids from our youth, and some other classmates have shared information. But I don't think I have a photo from Mrs. Harper's class. To see the others:

  • In the left menu of the website, click "Old Photos and Clippings."
  • Then "Grades K-6 Class Photos."
  • Then "Heights Elementary."

The fifth and sixth grade photos are inside classrooms and you really need to see a larger version of the photo to identify most kids.

Lance,

I don't recall saying anything about regretting investing in anything in particular. I didn't like the drop in the market caused by COVID, but not with regard to any particular stock. There were a couple of things I did do.

On March 24 (I think) I posted that I had put some money into the market on March 23 which, totally from luck, was the low point in the market. Then last week I posted that I was concerned about the market's being overheated, especially the tech sector. (Tesla had a 1200 P/E ratio.) I already hit my "number" and don't want to take as much risk as I have in the past. So on Tuesday I moved some money from equities into an account that pays 3%. I wish I had moved more.

That said, the Fed is giving support with monetary policy and the Congress is giving support with fiscal policy, so maybe the market will continue to go up (Thursday and Friday notwithstanding).

But for me, the upside doesn't offer nearly as much potential pleasure as the downside offers potential pain.

Wayne,

In Texas, the law allows the verdict to be read by the judge, the clerk or the presiding juror.  In my cases, the judge has always been the one to read it, but the law allows it by any of them.

Janalu, regarding your read on Sino-US economic circumstances and what we could or should do.

It is the most fear I have for our country and world should any kind of relations not be fixed between these two cultures.

We have a fairly similar knowledge of how our own country's history, culture, and economy got where we are today.

We have almost no knowledge of how China got where it is today.

Just opening up a wikipedia page to the history of China is quite disconcerting.

The US was a Chinese ally for about a century.  It's estimate 125,000 Chinese lost their lives at the hands of the Japanese just to rescue Doolittle's surviving airmen who crashed into the Chinese Mainland after bombing Tokyo in 1942.

Joe Stillwell's story by Barbara Tuchman is a great read for what happened in China relating to the US from 1911 thru WWII.  So is Red Star over China...(story of Mao and the Communists.)

Chiang Kai Shek and Mao Zhse Dong and their battles both before and after the 14 year occupation by Japan ruined any long term solution to a 20 year warlord reign which usurped a 8000-10000 civilization's way of evolving into a techno-manufacturing economy.

There are more perspectives on what the US and China should do than there are grains of sand on Padre Island.

I know this, both the US and China would greatly benefit from negotiated treaties as opposed to confrontational outputs.

They are turning inward.  We are turning inward.   Someone needs to get hold of this and fix it.

The Chinese are the nicest greatest persons...almost up there with us.

Wayne,

I watched The Big Lift. Good movie. There is some dialogue that made me think of our times. It is a conversation between the character played by Paul Douglas and his German semi-girlfriend. For anyone who may be interested, it is accessible in the second of the two youtube videos Wayne posted (the full movie) from 1:19:30 to 1:21:00.
