Reflections on Our Fallen Eagles; Elby Martin
I know several of you attended the Fallen Eagles Ceremony Saturday morning during our Reunion Weekend.
While I have not a lot going on right now, I would like to extend to the Forum more that could have been said about our dear friends, living or deceased. That is, if you don't have a lot going as I.
If I would have had the time, I sure would have spoken about our friend, Elby Martin. Elby and I were roomates at Stephen F. Austin our Freshman year. Elby was one of the most purest and loving persons I have ever known. I corrupted him at SFA. But before I get to that, I'd like to talk about his love of Basketball. At that time at SFA, the Lumberjacks were near the top ranked Basketball school in America. We went to 29-0 before losing the final game in the NAIA tournament in the 1969/70 season. Elby and I got student tickets all season long and we had to stand in very long lines to get them. Depending on the day of the game sometimes one of us would skip a class to stand in line making sure we could get our tickets. I suppose because of his relation with the RHS Eagles Basketball team as manager, he wanted a sky view of the court at SFA. So we always sat at mid court in the nosebleed section to watch the games. He analyized the game as a play-by-play announcer would today.
In the fall that year we both were in the Draft Lottery of people to be picked to go to VietNam. My # was 167 and his was # 9!!!! He was soooo depressed that he said he was going to drop out of school and buy a Harley and cruise the US before he was drafted. I convinced him that he did not have to worry AS long as he kept his grades up and maintained his college deferment.
Now to the corruption of Elby. There were a lot of my friends at SFA from RHS and a couple of them, Bill Brown and Steve Hull, lived off campus at a co-ed "dorm" that was a converted motel. Bill had a party planned for one Saturday night. Of course there was alcohol there. Elby was not a drinker, but he was a debonair dresser and was decked out in perfect attire for a mature party; including his new suede saddle oxfords he bought for the occasion to have lunch with Susan and her parents the following day. He was excited that his RHS girlfriend, Susan Newsom was making a trip down to Nacogdoches the next morning. Before I knew, Elby had alreay had more to drink than he could handle. He had gone into the bathroom and threw up all over his brand new shoes. I immediately took him back to our dorm. All he could talk about was what is he going to do about his shoes AND to make sure I woke him in time the next morning to be able to face Susan and her parents.
Given the relationship/history of Elby and Susan, I think it worked out!!!
Elby, I love you brother and miss you!
PS - This is a great story about Elby and Susan, BUT NOTHING like the later story at Elby and Susan's house "You are That David Foster"!
